According to Brett Cyrgalis at the New York Post, despite the Ryan Callahan injury and the Jason Arnott signing falling through, the Rangers have not reached out to free agents Brian Rolston and Daymond Langkow. Rolston, 39, had 7g, 17a in 70 games with the Islanders and Bruins last season. He also had 1g, 2a in seven playoff games with the Bruins. Langkow, 36, had 11g, 19a in 73 games with the Coyotes last year. He had 1g, 6a in 16 playoff games. ...good, neither of these guys excites me at all. Would rather the Rangers try to ride it out with a Whale call-up until Kreider is ready to return next week than waste their time with one of these guys. One guy who did seem to excite Rangers fans yesterday was F Zach Boychuk, who was waived by the Carolina Hurricanes. Boychuk, 23, is a 2008 first round pick (14th overall) of the Hurricanes and was their AHL affiliate's leading scorer this year with 16g, 16a in 37 games before he made the big club out of training camp. While the 5' 10" Boychuck has lit it up in the AHL, he has just 7g, 11a in 73 NHL games and has been a healthy scratch in four of five games this season. For the Rangers to acquire Boychuck they'd have to claim him off of waivers. Unfortunately, the teams with the worst records get first crack at submitting a claim, so with the Rangers currently in the middle of the pack, it is very unlikely Boychuck gets to them. ...while Boychuk's small stature could be a reason for his NHL struggles, at just 23, there's still plenty of upside with him and could be a potential steal for a Rangers team in desperate need of depth. ...i would so much rather the Rangers take a chance on a young, former first round pick than the broken down veterans that are currently available via free agency.
