The New York Rangers are on the verge of matching their longest winning streak in more than two years. To do so, they'll have to avoid a third consecutive road defeat against their archrivals.
The Rangers go for their seventh victory in a row when they face the reeling New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum for the second time this season Tuesday night.
The Rangers (9-3-3) have surged toward the top of the Eastern Conference with their longest run since a seven-game win streak Oct. 3-17, 2009. New York has allowed nine goals during the stretch.
Defenseman Dan Girardi netted a power-play goal to break a tie midway through the third period and Brandon Dubinsky scored 9 seconds later as the Rangers beat Carolina 5-1 on Friday.
Five New York players had a goal.
"Obviously, there is confidence that comes with a winning streak,'' right wing Ryan Callahan said. "We just have to keep the pucks crashing the net and good things will happen.''
That, however, hasn't been the case for the Rangers in the last two meetings with the Islanders - both on the road. The Islanders outscored them 10-4 in taking both games, the most recent a 4-2 win Oct. 15.
John Tavares recorded a hat trick, scoring the only two goals of the third period, and Evgeni Nabokov outplayed Henrik Lundqvist with a 29-save performance.
That win was the Isles' third straight, but the club has gone 1-6-3 since then. The Islanders (4-7-3), who fell 4-1 to Vancouver on Sunday for their third defeat in a row, are last in the NHL with 29 goals and have the fewest points in the East.
"I never call out guys, but there are guys that need to find their game and you've got to have some will,'' coach Jack Capuano said. "Our team, let's face it, there is not a lot of room for error, and once again we had a few guys that took a night off and we can't have it.''
Tavares, who hasn't scored in three games, has four goals and nine assists in his last seven games against the Rangers.
Rangers forward Marian Gaborik, held without a goal Friday after scoring twice in each of the previous two contests, has 15 goals and 12 assists in 22 games versus the Islanders.
"There's a lot of confidence in this room right now, so hopefully we can keep it up and keep going," Gaborik said. "We've won six straight and we want to keep this streak alive."
Lundqvist seems likely to be back in net after his team's three-day break, and he is 21-11-5 with a 2.23 goals-against average and three shutouts versus the Islanders. Backup Martin Biron has won 12 consecutive decisions against his former team, though he was pulled in the second period of his most recent matchup with them after allowing three goals in the Rangers' 6-5 win Dec. 2.
The Rangers have won two straight and four of their last five away from Madison Square Garden. The Islanders had dropped three in a row on home ice before beating Washington 5-3 in their most recent game there Nov. 5.

Is Olivia Munn the NY Rangers' secret weapon?
As you all well know, the New York Rangers are on a recent 6-0 run and there is a specific reason the team is feeling so hot; alternate captain Brad Richards reportedly started dating uber-hottie Olivia Munn over the last few weeks. In his last 7 games, Richards has netted 7 points, so scoring off the ice seems to help his performance ON the ice too. I could care less about the Rangers...
Video: Lundqvist Makes Header Save, Then Sprawls To Rob Parenteau
Henrik Lundqvist has been making saves with his head for years, but tonight he took it to another level combining the header with an unbelievable sprawling save. After making the header on Mark Streit, John Tavares found P.A. Parenteau with a seemingly open net to shoot at, but Henrik Lundqvist battled across without his stick and robbed him for a save of the year candidate.
The New York Rangers Keep On Rolling
The New York Rangers’ current six-game winning streak is the longest streak they’ve had since the 2009-2010 season, when they won seven in a row. And according to Larry Brooks, this is only the sixth time in the past 17 seasons that the Rangers have put together a six-game winning streak. It feels good. It [...]

Torts: Girardi is an All Star Player
John Tortorella continued his own personal All Star campaign for Dan Girardi by saying this about the Rangers defenseman to Blueshirts United..."He's turned into an All-Star player," noted the head coach. "He does everything. That's the simplest way to put it. He does everything there is for us, and he's the most underrated defenseman in the league. You...
When Stralman Plays Should Rangers Sit Woywitka or Eminger?
Given the New York Rangers current six game winning streak
it is hard to see coach John Tortorella changing anything in terms of the
lineup, but shortly there will be a decision to make on defense. Anton Stralman was signed to play and add to
the offense from the blue line and while he is still being worked into the
system his shot is coming soon. The
question is whether...
Rangers – Islanders Post Game Thoughts
Chris and I split the post game wrap up tonight. I had a dinner with other movers and shakers early this evening (of course I wore a pocket square, don’t be silly), so we kind of mixed and mashed our thoughts. Here’s what we got.
1st Period
For the first half of the first period, the Rangers applied great pressure on the puck carrier and didn’t let the Isles have much time...
Rangers 4, Islanders 2
Brad Richards' go-ahead goal with 4:55 remaining snapped a tie and sent the New York Rangers to their seventh straight victory, 4-2 over the New York Islanders on Tuesday night.
Richards broke a 2-2 tie, and Ryan Callahan added an empty-net goal in the final second for the Rangers, who are on their longest winning streak since October 2009 when they also won seven in a row....
Slap Shot: Rangers Win 7th Straight Against Floundering but Feisty Isles

Sunday Reads
Morning all, although only just for me as its almost midday here in the UK as I’m typing this… On a relatively quiet weekend for the Rangers (how often does a team get Saturday AND Sunday off?) its time to take a look around the Rangers universe at some of the more interesting reads.
Nick over at Rangers Tribune makes a very valid point (at least in my opinion, as well as his...
AHL player Dane Byers breaks down after fight, wants Trevor Gillies
You never know what you’re going to get when you go to an AHL game.
Maybe you see a scrub who was placed on waivers or sent down, or a rehabilitating top two forward.
Or, maybe, you’ll just witness an act of utter embarrassment by some guy you probably never heard of.
If you’ve never heard of Dane Byers, it’s because he’s played in all of six NHL games in his...
Focus Is Rangers Biggest Obstacle To Maintaining Win Streak Against Islanders
The
New York Rangers look to extend their winning streak to seven tonight as they
head to Long Island tonight to take on the rival Islanders. On paper it seems like an easy task as the
Rangers are now 9-3-3 while the Islanders are 1-6-3 following their 3-1
start. As Rangers fans know all too
well, games in this rivalry don’t turn out how paper would suggest they should...
Richards' late goal gives Rangers 7th straight win
Brad Richards' go-ahead goal with 4:55 remaining snapped a tie and sent the New York Rangers to their seventh straight victory, 4-2 over the New York Islanders on Tuesday night.
Rangers extend win streak
This was a case of the big-time player making the big-time play. This was a case of Page Six Brad Richards stepping up when the Rangers required it.
For it was Richards who overpowered Evgeni Nabokov with a left-circle slap shot at 15:05 of the third to break a...
