The New York Rangers continue to make moves to fill in the second-tier holes on their roster. The vacancies were left by the defections of a handful of key role players from the team that lost to the New Jersey Devils in the Eastern Conference finals.

All along, the Blueshirts and their fans have had their eyes on something significantly grander. While the waiting game continues in trade discussions with the Columbus Blue Jackets for star winger Rick Nash, the Rangers also are among several NHL teams to have expressed interest in Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan in free agency. Rangers coach John Tortorella and top assistant Jim Schoenfeld were members of the Coyotes' coaching staff early in the free agent forward's career in the late 1990s.

"We haven't entered into negotiations with any other teams, but Shane wants to be forthright and honest with clubs that have contacted us, and so we've let these clubs know whether there is mutual interest," Doan's agent, Terry Bross, told The New York Post. "I don't want to be specific about what teams those are, but there are no restrictions against negotiating with teams in the East ... or the one in Manhattan."

Another report in the New York Post even suggested the Rangers should shift their attention from trying to acquire Nash to putting together a package for perennial Norris Trophy candidate Shea Weber, in case the defenseman's talks on a contract extension with the Nashville Predators break down.

In the meantime, the Rangers added veteran center Jeff Halpern to an offseason haul that also includes the signings of forwards Arron Asham and Taylor Pyatt to fill the holes left by the defections of Brandon Prust, Ruslan Fedotenko and John Mitchell.
