On January 4th the Phoenix Coyotes put Petr Prucha on re-entry waivers. Prucha had been a point per game player with the San Antonio Rampage for 20 games before he was recalled from the AHL. He could have been had for half of his $1.2 million contract (600k for the non-math geniuses out there) and the Rangers made a mistake not claiming him.

The first thought that may come to mind to a reader is: "CoB you just have a man crush on Prucha, get over it". But no, my wish for a Prucha reunion has nothing to do with an unrealistic hope he would once again become a 30 goal scorer.

Pru would have been a cheap insurance policy to guard against injuries. At the time, Brandon Dubinsky and Ruslan Fedotanko had not yet gone down with injuries. But Ryan Callahan, Erik Christensen, and Vinny Prospal were all still out of the lineup. Additionally, the call up options from the Whale were getting thin as Dale Weise, Kris Newbury, and Mats Zuccarello were already with the Rangers.

Claiming Prucha had everything to do with him being an insurance policy. No, this isn't a case of hindsight is 20/20. You don't buy homeowners insurance when your house has already gone up in flames and you don't buy health insurance when you've become sick. It's not a monumental mistake by the Rangers but it would have been nice to have a player with significant NHL experience on the roster to fill-in instead of recent call-ups Brodie Dupont or Chad Kolarik.
