The New York Rangers and New York Islanders both looked to add talent on Friday. The Blueshirts added a big defenseman with the 10th pick while the Isles went with a Swiss forward at 5th overall.
The Rangers decided to add Dylan McIlrath out from the Moose Jaw Warriors. Many pundits harshly criticized the Blueshirts for not trading down or picking the two higher rated defensemen still on the board. However, McIlrath is a beast with a nasty streak. He probably has a ways to go before he’s NHL-ready — but he also has a lot of upside.
Nino Niederreiter will be the second Swiss player on the Isles along with captain Mark Streit. Niederreiter is known as a skilled player and shined in the World Junior Championships. He’s the highest drafted Swiss player of all time.
