The Florida Panthers have confirmed that they have acquired winger Casey Wellman from the New York Rangers in exchange for a 2014 5th round draft pick. Wellman was acquired last season from the Minnesota Wild in return for Erik Christensen and a 7th.

Wellman had 22 points in 31 games for the Connecticut Whale and certainly has some offensive skill. However, he is a one dimensional player and his skillset does not translate well in the NHL; especially in John Tortorella's system. Wellman has only 9 points in 41 NHL games and will be 25 in October; there is likely not much more room for him to grow.

I would have liked to see Wellman in the pre-season to see if his skill could be of use, if only temporarily. With Zuccarello gone the Rangers don't have many offensive options should a call-up be necessary. Still, it's hard to be upset at what amounts to Erik Christensen and a 7th in return for a 5th rounder. Christensen is a player who could have easily hit waivers so getting anything at all for Christensen is good. And the Rangers have had success with late round draft picks. Little things can sometimes make a big difference.
