The Washington Capitals are busy preparing for their upcoming shortened season and their votes to ratify the new CBA.  That will come today and tomorrow.   Looks like the Caps will kick off the season against Steven Stamkos and the Tamp Bay Lightning.  That will be on Saturday, January 19.  Training camp opens this weekend.  The Caps have decided against inviting juniors because, according to GM George McPhee, they stand little to no chance of making the roster.  2012 first round pick Tom Wilson did get an invite and will be present.   Wilson's invite could have to do with the Nicklas Backstrom neck injury and perhaps Wilson could get a look from the Caps.  Wilson will play Friday night for Plymouth before heading tot he District.  Speaking of prospects, Caps have several prospects in the NCAA and playing in Europe, but they do have a small contingent in the CHL.  Although we anxiously await word on the extent of the injury to Backstrom, although we believe it may be...

Alex Ovechkin’s new Gillette commercial chock-full of Ovie goodness (video)

It’s been awhile since Washington Capitals superstar Alexander Ovechkin has graced the pages here at SoB. The lengthy lockout had a lot to do with that, obviously, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that a man we have affectionately referred to in the past as “Unfrozen Caveman Hockey Player” has been a longtime favorite of this here site (this might be my favorite —...

Alex Ovechkin stars in bizarre new Gillette commercial

This new commercial from Gillette starring Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin is completely bizarre.  Now maybe if I understood Russian or there were some subtitles, it would seem less strange, but I highly doubt it.Ovechkin got a new deal with Gillette in late 2012 that runs until 2014 and is virtually the same as his old one.  The only update is that he can now have...

Steven Hindle: Does Ovechkin's Success Depend on Backstrom's Health?

Dynamic (when healthy) Duo The return of Alex Ovechkin to Washington earned plenty of headlines and attention, yet that of Nicklas Backstrom was far more subdued. So, instead of focused columns...

Steven Hindle: Center Strong

Depth Down the Middle Among the many issues that may cause the Washington Capitals some trouble this season, depth down the middle will finally not be on that list. Thanks to a draft day acquisition by George McPhee, the burden of carrying the load at center will no longer fall on Nicklas Backstrom's shoulders but will be shared by newcomer (and regular point producer...
