The Washington Capitals will look to rebound from a rather poor performance in their opening season loss to Tamp Bay.  Caps clearly struggled a bit, especially on defense, playing in the new Adam Oates system.  Tonight is Game Two of 48 and the Caps will host the Winnipeg Jets.  Winnipeg has opened their season at 0-2.  Here are some Game Previews:  We will kick it off with our Bloguin Partner, Rock the Red More ... CBS Sports, Yahoo, NHL.com, Mike Vogel, Peerless,  Sick, Unblievable , Arctic Ice Hockey, Caps know they have work to do to fully grasp and become comfort bale within Oates' system.  Eyes will turn to team captain Alexander Ovechkin.  As they work to grasp the system, Ovechkin will need to step up as the dynamic scorer that he can be.  Ovechkin knows that as well.  His line will be absolutely critical to the Caps success, especially early on.  As Washington readied for its home opener at Verizon Center on Tuesday night against the Winnipeg Jets, O...

No Denial, It’s Pass or Fail, and the Caps Are Realizing It

For a moment, the puck just sat there by the Washington Capitals bench. It shouldn’t have—those were precious seconds wasted as the Capitals executed a personnel change, and Mike Green, caught with the puck near Winnipeg’s blueline thanks to his power play positioning, had the opponent breathing in his face. He was forced to pass the puck almost horizontally across the ice...

Red Alert: Caps struggle in new system

The Washington Capitals dropped their season opener by a score of 6-3 in Tampa Bay.  The loss was pretty ugly from a defensive standpoint.  As we stated in several pre-season article and you likely read elsewhere, the biggest concern entering the short 48 game season for the Caps was familiarity and comfort with a new system in Washington.  That comfort was lacking Saturday evening...

Washington Capitals give Braden Holtby second shot

Will he stand tall or muck it up?Holtby allowed six goals on 34 shots during Washington’s season-ending opening 6-3 loss at Tampa Bay. First-year coach Adam Oates vowed to give his other goaltender, Michal Neuvirth, plenty of work this season. So some observers wondered...

Washington's Mike Rebeiro rips on NHL officiating

That didn't take long, did it?  Shortly after the Washington Capitals dropped their home opener by a score of 4-2 to the Winnipeg Jets, newcomer Mike Ribeiro wasn't shy in making his feelings for the officials known. Ribeiro had just ended the game with a 10-minute misconduct and a 2-minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and was feeling chatty about how he thinks the...

Caps recall Tomas Kundratek

Game one is in the books.  So is injury one.  D Jack Hillen has been placed on the injured reserve by the Caps after a hit into the boards by Tampa's Vincent Lecavalier.  Hillen suffered a left shoulder injury and is considered to be week to week.  Hillen's 2013 first season with the Caps lasted about 11 minutes before he nailed the boards and grimaced in pain. ...

TV station rechristens Winnipeg Jets "Winnipeg Jerts"

As seen on Busted Coverage this morning, a local news intern has allegedly been fired over this unfortunate typo. As to what a Jert even is, I'm unsure. I did a quick Google search and some Urban Dictionary thumbing through, and nothing reprehensible came up. It's just a typo. Or is it...? No, never mind. I think it's just part of the latest chant at the...

Ty Anderson: Rask, Bruins outlast Jets in shootout

Last year, the Winnipeg Jets won just a woeful 14 of 41 games on the road. Perhaps the biggest reason for the club missing out on a playoff spot in their first year out of Atlanta, the Jets knew that the results on the road simply had to change if they’re to compete for a spot in this year’s 48-game sprint to the postseason. And they did, in the opening two minutes...

Practice: Jan. 21

The Washington Capitals were on ice Monday for a practice following a day off after getting smacked around by the Lightning Saturday night, and as they prepare to meet the Jets in their home opener Tuesday.  Some updates from Kettler Capitals Iceplex: Defenseman Jack Hillen, who took a crunching hit from Vincent Lecavalier and left the game Saturday, did not skate and was placed...

The Blind Spot

In hockey, net traffic and screens can be your best friend or worst enemy. Washington learned that the hard way Saturday in the 3-6 loss to Tampa. Traffic certainly didn’t account for all of Tampa’s scoring, but it appeared to help on at least a few of the tallies. Capitals’ goaltender Braden Holtby already plays an aggressive style of goaltending which is fairly protective...

Gameday: vs. Winnipeg, Jan. 22

WJLA The Washington Capitals will kick off their 2013 home schedule Tuesday night as they welcome the Winnipeg Jets to Verizon Center for a Southeast Division clash.  The Capitals, having got off to a poor start by getting smacked around in Tampa Saturday night, will need to take advantage of a Jets squad playing their second game in 30 hours.  Winnipeg lost to the Bruins,...

Peter Tessier: Capital Offence

follow Pete on Twitter HERE The Winnipeg Jets went into Washington tonight, the second game of a back-to-back, where they needed to bring some energy and performance where little existed last year. In the Jets 2.0 inaugural season they were 1-10-1 in back-to-back games, not a flattering stat. Thus, early in the season they needed to buck that trend and tonight was their first...

Which Team Selected Blake Wheeler Fifth Overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft?

The 2004 NHL entry draft consisted of a pretty impressive roster, to say the least. Russian superstars Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin went No. 1 and No. 2 overall, respectively before Canadians Cam Barker and Andrew Ladd were picked in the next two slots. American Blake Wheeler, from the University of Minnesota, was snagged with the fifth-overall pick. Which team drafted him...

Canadiens-Capitals Preview

If the Washington Capitals' first two games have proven anything, it's that they are a work in progress struggling to learn a new system under a new coach. The shortened season makes it even more important for them to be a quick study. Washington looks to avoid its first season-opening three-game losing streak in nearly two decades Thursday night when it faces the visiting...
