Found February 08, 2013 on Kukla's Korner:
The Detroit Red Wings flew back to Metro Detroit to greet anywhere from 2-6 inches of snow a little less encumbered by concerns about their team's trajectory after defeating the St. Louis Blues 5-1 on Thursday, giving the Wings a 2-and-1 record in what will be a four-game series with the Blues as of next Wednesday's meeting, and righting the Wings' ship with the Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings coming to town for matinee games on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. The Wings played like a team that consisted of completely different players from the Wings team that struggled so mightily against Calgary and Columbus, and the team may very well have bested its performance in its 5-3 win against the same Blues one week ago tonight because the Wings' "best players" didn't have to take the team on their backs to defeat the Blues. Or, as KMOV's Scott Bierman put it, the Blues couldn't "contain [the] Red Wings' low-scorers": Cont...

Red Wings goalie Petr Mrazek’s funny facemask (PIC)

Earlier in this young NHL season, pictures of the facemask of then-backup Red Wings goalie Thomas McCollum made their internet debut.  McCollum has a liking of the late Chris Farley’s character Tommy Boy. Apparently the sense of humor is a trend among Wings backup netminders as the current Jimmy Howard backup, Petr Mrazek, has a different funny guy on his mask.  The 20-year old...

Rapping Red Wings: Assessing Jimmy Howard’s Role in Detroit’s Early Season Woes

Flickr, Anna Enriquez To say things haven’t gone as planned for the Detroit Red Wings to start the shortened hockey season is putting it mildly. Plenty of familiar issues, be them with scoring, the power play or the penalty kill have all reared their ugly heads at inoppertune times. But, have there also been some bigger issues in between the pipes to complicate these matters? It...

Petr Mrazek to Make NHL Debut for Detroit Red Wings Against St. Louis Blues

Rookie Petr Mrazek, one of the gems of Detroit’s minor-league system, will make his first NHL start on Thursday night, as the Red Wings head into St. Louis to take on the Blues. Multiple reports confirmed the news Thursday afternoon, following rumors of the possible switch in net. The Red Wings just called Mrazek up from Grand Rapids following Detroit’s loss to Calgary on Tuesday...

Johan Franzen receives match penalty and is ejected for spearing David Perron

This was an extremely stupid thing for Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen to do.  I understand he was upset that St. Louis Blues forward David Perron hit him when his back was turned, but that is still no excuse for turning around and spearing Perron right in the midsection.  Perron was already going to be assessed a boarding penalty for the hit on Franzen and went to the...

Mrazek and the role players come up big in Wings’ 5-1 win over Blues

All of a sudden that 6-0 opening season loss to the Blues seems like a long time ago. Thursday night the Wings defeated St. Louis 5-1 behind an impressive performance by rookie goaltender Petr Mrazek and the third and fourth lines. Mrazak who made his first career NHL start for a resting Jimmy Howard turned away 26 shots in the win while looking extremely confident between the pipes...

Belated: Todd Bertuzzi is like the rest of us with bad backs: ‘day to day’

Sorry this is so very late, but I kinda crashed after a pair of nights with little sleep and some fun fun fun moving of cars around the condo parking lot early in the morning. There's something of a modicum of good news on the back injury front! MLive's Ansar Khan reports that Red Wings forward Todd Bertuzzi is just dealing with the kinds of issues that those of us with bad...

NHL decides that 5 and a game misconduct was enough punishment for Johan Franzen

I may be one of five people who had no problem with Red Wings forward Johan Franzen spearing David Perron after Perron smashed Franzen's face into the boards (since Franzen suffered a subdural hematoma after being concussed against the Colorado Avalanche in 2008, and you may remember how Gary Roberts welcomed Franzen back by punching him in the face repeatedly), especially as...

Mrazek wins NHL debut, Red Wings beat Blues

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Petr Mrazek made 26 saves in his NHL debut, leading the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Thursday night. Detroit halted a two-game skid with its second win in three tries against St. Louis this season. The Blues, who beat Detroit 6-0 on Jan. 19, dropped their third in a row. They have lost three successive games in regulation for...

Chip McCleary: 2/6, Blues vs. Red Wings - Recap: Time to Get a Little Desperate

My 3 stars of the game 1. Cory Emmerton, DET. 1 goal, 1 assist. 2. Damian Brunner, DET. 1 goal, had a couple other decent chances. 3. Drew Miller, DET. 2 assists. Honorable mention: Petr Mrazek (28 saves on 29 shots; maybe deserving of a star but I didn’t see a lot of “tough” saves out of him). In all honesty, no one really stood out in a positive way...

Emmerton's Game (And Maybe Season) Changing Goal

Post By Franklin Steele:  The Wings just caved in the collective faces of the Blues for the second consecutive time since the opening night fiasco (that's my punk band name for the week... nailed it) and I should be pretty stoked about the final score of 5-1. Petr Mrazek played very well, but there is one moment that stands out to me from this game. Emmerton's goal...

Mark Spizzirri: Role reversal

After being on the receiving end of a 6-0 drubbing to these same St. Louis Blues at the Scottrade Center less than 3 weeks ago, the Detroit Red Wings returned the favor tonight with an impressive 5-1 beatdown of the Blues. While most will remember this game as the first NHL start and win for young goaltender Petr Mrazek, the Red Wings strong play from the opening face-off indicated...
