Red Wings fans can’t necessarily be surprised by this, but, as the Detroit News’s Ted Kulfan, the Macomb Daily’s Chuck Pleiness and MLive’s Ansar Khan note, the 11 games missed by the Red Wings’ captain and an up-and-down season production-wise yield Nicklas Lidstrom not heading to the NHL Awards in Las Vegas for the first time in what seems like forever: Zdeno Chara of Boston, Erik Karlsson of Ottawa and Shea Weber of Nashville are this year’s finalists for the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman. It marks just the third time in the past 14 seasons that Detroit Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom, a seven-time Norris Trophy winner, was not a finalist.  Continue reading "Red Wings mid-day news: no Norris for Nick, more Holmstrom talk, injury news and…Honeybadgers?"

Red Wings’ players, coach know that Brad Stuart’s skates are out the door

Amidst the biggest “storylines” from the Red Wings’ locker room clean-out day, in terms of cringe-worthiness, anyway, Danny Cleary’s knee issues (the Detroit News’s Ted Kulfan adds to the conversation in a blog entry this afternoon) earned some serious sympathy pains… But the Red Wings’ player who seemed to be suffering the most discomfort, however, was and is defenseman...

The 2012-2013 Detroit Red Wings

Tomas Holmstrom could be the odd man out going into next season. By Rhys Richards (@RREsq) On Tuesday, the Red Wings cleaned out their lockers. As with the end of every season, questions abound. Some are questions the organization has faced before, but Detroit will also encounter new dilemmas this off-season. Many hockey fans will wait with bated breath once again as team captain...

Red Wings afternoon news: revisiting Franzen’s comments, on Cleary and Stuart and Kindl summation

Despite our comments to the contrary regarding one Johan Franzen’s comments about the wheels falling off the Big Red Machine, I thought that Franzen’s suggestion that the Wings struggled down the stretch in no small part due to, as he told MLive’s Ansar Khan, a lack of self-confidence and plain old forgetting how to enjoy themselves—to the point that the Wings’ swagger...

Red Wings overnight report: Kronwall changes his mind about World Championships

File this line under, “Blog post starters you’re regrettably going to read me saying rather regularly between now and the draft”: This morning’s most notable Red Wings news story comes from Sweden, because Niklas Kronwall has changed his mind about remaining in Detroit to supervise the building of a new home, and instead, he’s going to leave for Stockholm with Henrik Zetterberg...

Keep Franzen, There's Nobody Better For The Price

Chris Note:  As I am still mourning the loss of a Winged loved one, DetCapC19 came thru with a great guest post.  Enjoy. There’s been a lot said about Johan Franzen over the course of both this season and our recent playoff failure. In particular, I was caught off guard when Babcock seemed to call him out after Game 5 saying, “I don't think we had a lot of help for Pavel”...

Wait, what? The Mule has all the answers as to why the Red Wings lost their mojo?

MLive’s Ansar Khan spoke to Red Wings forward Johan Franzen about both his disappointing 2011-2012 season and playoffs and his team’s stumbles from February onward, and, well…While Khan says that the Wings’ free agency shopping list does indeed include all of my hopes in that damn bottom-six winger with size to mash and grind on the fourth line, the top-pair defenseman the...

Red Wings mid-day news: Worlds stuff, observations from Friedman and Custance and EA Datsyuk

As Paul noted, Red Wings fans can at least take some small solace in knowing that the NBC Sports Network will air a good chunk of the World Championship‘s later-round games, allowing us to watch Henrik Zetterberg, Johan Franzen, Jonathan Ericsson (all playing for Sweden), Valtteri Filppula (Finland), Tomas Tatar (Slovakia), Jakub Kindl (Czech Republic), Jimmy Howard, Justin Abdelkader...

Kris Draper, Chris Osgood, Scotty Bowman, Wayne Gretzky talk about Steve Yzerman’s 1996 2OT GWG

From We All Bleed Red on YouTube and TSN, Red Wings execs Kris Draper and Chris Osgood, former coach Scotty Bowman, NHL analyst Darren Pang and one Wayne Gretzky all recollect the circumstances surrounding the most famous goal of Steve Yzerman’s career, his double OT winner against the St. Louis Blues in 1996:

Red Wings overnight report: locker room clean-out day provides more questions than answers

After more or less collapsing due to lingering exhaustion on Monday evening, I woke up with a start, with my bizarre dreams and pseudo-nightmares having given way to that inevitable, “You need to get up, you have to update the blog” nag that has become an internal alarm clock, but I rose for my middle-of-the-night sojourn through this morning’s crop of articles related to Monday’s...

Is another dispersal draft-via-buy-outs on the way under the new CBA?

Given our little discussion regarding the underwhelming nature of Red Wings GM Ken Holland’s comments regarding his team’s plans in terms of possibly signing free agents, I’ve had this nagging voice in my head wondering whether Holland’s comments had something to do with the CBA which the NHL and NHLPA must negotiate this summer. The CBA which the NHL essentially wrote by...

Lidstrom still mum on future plans

The Detroit Red Wings have gathered for their annual team picture. Nicklas Lidstrom isn't sure, or won't say, if he will come back. The four-time Stanley Cup champion and seven-time Norris Trophy winner said Tuesday he plans to decide by July 1 whether to return or retire. He believes his body can hold up for another season, but isn't sure if he'll be mentally motivated...

Habs GM search: quick thoughts on Jim Nill

As you have no doubt heard by now, Detroit Red Wings Assistant General Manager Jim Nill declined the Canadiens GM job after multiple meetings and conversations with Geoff Molson. Apparently, these conversations began almost immediately after Pierre Gauthier’s dismissal. Nill would have been a great GM, and I suspect he will be, one day, somewhere else. However, his wife is quite...

Kamal Panesar: Detroit's Jim Nil Says 'No' to Montreal Canadiens GM Position

According to an article posted on RDS this morning, it appears that Detroit Red Wings Assistant GM, Jim Nil, has turned down the Habs offer to take over the GM reigns. Here's the article: http://www.rds.ca/canadien/chroniques/339094.html If you read the piece, it states that both Nil and the Habs were interested but an illness in the family is preventing Nil from making...

Predators-Red Wings Series Recap

This series is now in the books and the Predators managed to oust the Detroit Red Wings, in five games and advance to the second round of the playoffs for the second time in franchise history. Most pundits and bloggers were split on their prediction on who would win this series but one thing they agreed on was that it would be a long series. That obviously wasn't the case as...
