Red Wings overnight report: on Lidstrom’s MSHOF induction, Olympic Babs and ‘the kids’ up front

The Red Wings' post-Olympic schedule is certainly...Different. After playing back-to-backs in Montreal and Ottawa this past Wednesday and Thursday, the Wings will return to practicing today with no game scheduled until Tuesday's road tilt in New Jersey... But Tuesday's game kicks off a set of 5 games to be played over the course of 8 nights, including next Thursday...

As trade deadline looms, blockbuster deal unlikely for Detroit Red Wings

The NHL is closing in on it’s spring-time shopping event, with the trade deadline looming in a matter of days. As intriguing as it might be to tinker up front, the Detroit Red Wings’ biggest need is to bolster their back end. Searching for a veteran defenseman this time of year is a nearly-league wide competition, because every team in the playoff hunt wants more depth in that...

Red Wings' playoff hopes rest on Datsyuk

It's a hockey fan's favorite time of year, with speculation, rumor and innuendo driving the NHL conversation. With Wednesday's trade deadline fast approaching, a few names have emerged as being linked to the Red Wings. Native Detroiters David Legwand of Nashville and Ryan Kesler of Vancouver -- both centers -- along with one of Kesler's teammate, defenseman Alexander...

Red Wings’ Nicklas Lidstrom inducted into Michigan Sports Hall of Fame

Again, Fox Sports Detroit's Dana Wakiji and the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame are live-Tweeting tonight's MSHOF induction ceremonies, but a little gratuitious Nicklas Lidstrom-with-Tom-Leyden interview time (via RedWingsFeed) is never a bad thing--and there's an, "AWW" moment at the end, too: I believe that Lidstrom's doing some autograph-signings...

Daniel Alfredsson still has plenty of gas in the tank

The suggestion that a normal 41-year-old would appreciate a little R&R during the dog days of a long, cold NHL winter made Gustav Nyquist laugh. "No, not Alfie. Not Alfie, for sure," the winger said of his teammate with both the Detroit Red Wings and Swedish national squad after a morning skate at the Bell Centre Wednesday. "It's amazing. Not many people can...

Franzen's three-goal night powers Red Wings over Senators

Maybe that Olympic break came at just the right time for the Red Wings. It certainly appears to have helped Johan Franzen. Something definitely helped, considering the way the Red Wings looked the last two games, including Thursday’s resounding 6-1 victory in Ottawa, with Franzen getting a hat trick. Coupled with an overtime win in Montreal the night before, it was a successful...

Red Wings prospect news: Griffins out-last Heat; Mantha, Athanasiou, McKee score; catch-up time!

As I'm behind by a few days, this will be something of a "prospect catchy-uppy" post, and I'll try to separate "tonight's" results from previous nights' events, on a league-by-league basis, as per usual: In the AHL, the Grand Rapids Griffins are spending the weekend in lovely Abbotsford, British Columbia, tangling with the Calgary Flames'...

Free Press kicks off Nicklas Lidstrom Jersey Retirement Week

Something tells me that between now and Thursday's actual retirement of Nicklas Lidstrom's #5, which will be aired on Fox Sports Detroit starting at 6:30 PM EST (we "spring forward" next Sunday), we're probably going to learn more little, "humanizing" details regarding the "Perfect Human" than we did during the course of his playing career...

Chris Neil unbuckles Johan Franzen's helmet, punches him in the head

Chris Neil is a real dickhead. Just look at him peeing out of his mouth!  In Johan Franzen's second game back from a concussion, the Ottawa Senators' goon tried to goad Franzen into a fight, and when Franzen smartly refused to drop the gloves, Neil unbuckled Franzen's helmet, gave him a right jab to the side of the head and then tossed Franzen into the boards. ...

Franzen, Wings put on a show in Ottawa

Bobby Ryan...

Wallner: Grand Rapids Griffins lost Alexey Marchenko for the year last Sunday

This is a bit belated but it's certainly worth noting: According to the Grand Rapids Press's Peter J. Wallner, there was a reason that the Red Wings temporarily recalled Ryan Sproul prior to knowing whether Niklas Kronwall and Jonathan Ericsson would be good to go for Wednesday's game against Montreal--and this is "bummerrific" news regarding a prospect who...
