Goodness gracious, great balls of fire, the Detroit Red Wings played a wonderfully, wonderfully entertaining game against an Edmonton Oilers team that nearly squeaked one out thanks to Nikolai Khabibulin's masterful performance, narrowly out-performed and out-played by the savvy, veteran Pavel Datsyuks, I mean Red Wings, who earned a 2-1 win in gutsy, glorious fashion. But the Red Wings got the first goal, a fantatsic lateral-lateral-lateral play to Pavel Datsyuk, who ripped a hard shot past Khabibulin thanks to a great legal pick by Johan Franzen, the Wings survived Justin Schultz's late 2nd period PPG via a slap shot through a couple of Oilers and Wings that Jimmy Howard never saw, and in the third period of a penalty-filled game (so much for consistent refereeing), Franzen played into the equation again as Zetterberg, Super Datsyuk (Datsyuk narrowly out-performed Khabibulin) and Brunner got the puck back to Niklas Kronwall and he ripped a high, hard shot through Khabibu...

The Wings waive goaltender Joey MacDonald in hopes of placing him in Grand Rapids

According to Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News, the Red Wings have placed goaltender Joey MacDonald on waivers in hopes of sending him to Grand Rapids of the AHL. The 33-year-old MacDonald has been battling back issues since March of last year when he suffered a bulging disc and has since become more expendable with the addition of Jonas Gustavsson in the offseason and the emergence...

Jonathan Ericsson’s late third period goal saves linesman’s bladder

The Detroit Red Wings made it interesting Sunday afternoon.  The took a 2-0 lead late in the first period before allowing the Kings to score in the last minute of the first.  The 2-1 lead held up for all of the second period and 19:07 of game time in the third period before Alec Martinez tied it up for Los Angeles. Enter Jonathan Ericsson.  The Wings defenseman buried a shot with...

Jonathan Ericsson Says He Was Thanked After Scoring Game-Winner by Linesman Who ‘Had to Pee’

The Detroit Red Wings and Los Angeles Kings played one of the most exciting games of the young NHL season Sunday, and it left some hockey fans wishing the game would go to overtime. At least one person on the ice was just fine with the Red Wings winning the game on a Jonathan Ericsson goal with just 4.5 seconds left to play in Detroit. That would be one of the linesmen, who was hoping...

Howard lifts Wings over Kings, 3-2

DETROIT -- For all those people who thought that young goaltender Petr Mrazek's time was now, Jimmy Howard proved Sunday that his time is far from over. The Red Wings were a tired team, playing its third game in four days. After taking a 2-1 lead over the Kings in the first period on Pavel Datsyuk's power-play goal and Damien Brunner's sixth goal in 12 games, the Wings...

GDT - Game 12: Red Wings (6-4-1) host Kings (3-4-2) 12:30

Third game in four days for DET; a 5-1 beatdown against STL on Thursday, and a 2-1 "special teams" win yesterday against the Oil.  Nevermind what I said yesterday:  "If todays tilt is a special teams contest, you have to like the Oil's chances."  Obviously I have no clue what the hell I am talking aboot.  DET scored two PP goals, and much more importantly...

Kings fall to Red Wings on last-second goal

DETROIT (AP) -- Jonathan Ericsson scored with 5 seconds left to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday. The Kings failed to clear the puck, less than a minute after they tied the game, and Ericsson took advantage. His slap shot from above the right circle trickled through Jonathan Quick's pads. Los Angeles pulled Quick with a minute left...

Johan Franzen receives match penalty and is ejected for spearing David Perron

This was an extremely stupid thing for Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen to do.  I understand he was upset that St. Louis Blues forward David Perron hit him when his back was turned, but that is still no excuse for turning around and spearing Perron right in the midsection.  Perron was already going to be assessed a boarding penalty for the hit on Franzen and went to the...

Red Wings-Kings quick take: three ways to win

Updated w/ stats and highlights at 3:35 PM: The Detroit Red Wings' 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings was anything but a thing of beauty, at least if you're not a fan of watching Jimmy Howard getting peppered with 47 shots... But the Red Wings managed to find a way to earn two points while playing their 4th game in 6 "nights," their 3rd game in 4 "nights...

Red Wings-Kings set-up and overnight report: on forward momentum, superstars and prospects

The Detroit Red Wings proved that they can still out-skill as well as out-will teams in their 2-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday, but today's game against Los Angeles (12:30 PM EST, NBC/TSN/97.1 FM, and the Wings are collecting smoke detectors for charity), but the Red Wings know they're in for a challenge and a half as they wrap up a slate of 4 games played...

Oilers-Red Wings Preview

Depleted by injuries, the Edmonton Oilers find themselves saddled with a four-game losing streak. They have managed to earn points in three of those defeats, however, and help could be on the way starting Saturday when Edmonton tries to end a string of five consecutive road losses to the Detroit Red Wings. Playing without three of its top four centers in Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Shawn...

State of Fans

Ah to be a Red Wings fan. To be a member of the Order, and belong to one of the most despised sub-cultures on the planet. Hated in the hockey world like Yankees fans in baseball, Cowboys fans in the NFL, Notre Dame fans in the NCAA level and loving every damn minute of it. I always look to our undying spirit yet unreasonably high expectations as a function of the sustained success...

Richard Cloutier: Battle of the Bad I: Jackets vs. Oilers

Wamp wamp waaa... That's the sound coming from Columbus Blue Jackets GM Scott Howsen when the Edmonton Oilers won the Entry Draft lottery back in June. Many speculated neither team wanted to win, as both teams wanted defenseman Ryan Murray. Rumor has it Oilers management were set to take Murray 1st overall until team owner Daryl Katz got involved. The fans clearly wanted Nail...
