The Detroit Red Wings spent Sunday morning flying to Phoenix probably feeling like Ales Hemsky did after he was very cleanly Kronwalled (and even the Edmonton Journal’s David Staples says the hit was clean)—probably a little dazed and confused as to how they’d managed to rally from 2-0 and 3-1 deficits to take a 4-3 lead on the Edmonton Oilers… And yet a three-goal third period wasn’t enough to overcome the team’s defensive miscues or its continued inability to score on the power play (the Wings went 0 for 4 and blew a full two-minute 5 on 3), and in their eighth shootout game, the Wings’ shooters got as cute as they did during the first 40 minutes of play, and as such, they dropped a 5-4 shootout decision to the plucky Oilers. For Edmonton, which has won four of its past five games, witnessing Sam Ganger keep the good times rolling by registering 3 points in his follow-up to his 8-point game against Chicago and managing to rally from thei...

Ty Conklin's job on the goal line

Jimmy Howards broken right index finger will be either the best or worst case scenario for Red Wing backup goalie Ty Conklin. Not that Conklin or anybody else for that matter wanted to see Howard get injured, but in pro sports it comes down to opportunity. If anybody needs an opportunity to prove themselves, its Ty Conklin. Since he backstopped the Wings to 3-0 victory at Colorado...

Richard Cloutier: Ales is Wonderland

Somedays being a small fish in a big pond sucks. There is much more to the Ales Hemsky situation that what's apparent and obvious to the masses. And just what do the masses know? - Ales Hemsky becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1st if the Oilers don't re-sign him first. - Hemsky is playing like a man who wants to be dealt. - The Oilers don't seem that...

Talking about the post-Nicklas Lidstrom Red Wings

Sportsnet’s Mark Spector penned an intriguing column regarding the Red Wings’ future as Nicklas Lidstrom approaches the end of his career, talking about the team’s desire to remain elite even when Lidstrom eventually hangs ‘em up with Wings GM Ken Holland: “I’m big on defencemen, and I think Nick has been the best at his position,” begins...

Taylor Hall on After Hours

Taylor Hall has been upstaged by teammates throughout his short NHL career. In his first NHL game, Jordan Eberle scored “some goal” and stole the spotlight. And most recently when Hall had his first 4 point game, Sam Gagner went ahead and had 8. It doesn’t seem to bother Hall that much however, Hall cares more about wins than anything else. Taking a skate to the...

Tom Renney To Miss Game Due To Puck Inflicted Injury

The Oilers have suffered another injury today. No it wasn’t a defenceman, forward or even a goaltender that went down, but it was an injury suffered during the morning skate. Just as the final player is coming off of the injured reserve list, Oilers’ head coach Tom Renney was struck in the head this morning with a puck. Renney was taken for stitches and it has just...

Oilers beat NHL-leading Red Wings

Sam Gagner continued to rack up the points and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored the shootout winner as the Edmonton Oilers beat the league-leading Detroit Red Wings 5-4 on Saturday night. Gagner had two goals and an assist one night after his eight-point game in Edmonton's 8-4 win over Chicago. He also scored in the shootout. The Oilers blew a 3-1 lead in the third period but sent...

Red Wings-Oilers set-up and overnight report: deceptively difficult

File this puppy under things I didn’t think I’d say in the middle of the night on February 3rd, 2011: Lost amidst the news regarding Jimmy Howard’s broken index fingertip, the Red Wings’ first outdoor practice in Metro Detroit, their off-day trade talk, broomball tournament and discussion of Detroit’s 4-3 shootout win over the Vancouver Canucks…...

Red Wings-Oilers quick take: first the shootout giveth, then it taketh away

Updated with highlights, fights, etc.: The Detroit Red Wings’ 5-4 shootout loss to the Edmonton Oilers was a tale of would’ve’s, should’ve’s and could’ve’s. What would have happened if the Red Wings hadn’t given up a 2-goal lead? What should have happened had the Wings not allowed the Oilers to take a 3-1 lead on a goal scored with...

Good encore for Gagner as Oilers top Wings in SO

Sam Gagner continued to rack up the points and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored the shootout winner as the Edmonton Oilers beat the league-leading Detroit Red Wings 5-4 on Saturday night.

Oilers waste 3-1 lead in third period but go on to beat Red Wings 5-4 in shootout

Dirty Wings

from Open Ice Hitter at the StarPhoenix, - Interesting how the sports news crews and broadcasters refer vaguely to Patrick Sharp’s wrist injury …. Avoiding the mention of Jiri Hudler’s name, or the fact the Detroit Red Wing worm smashed Sharp’s wrist with a vicious slash …. Where is this going ? Yup. TO Brendan Shanahan … ex Detroit Red...

Oilers blow 3-1 lead but top Red Wings in shootout

Fingers crossed, Jimmy Howard hopeful he'll return to Red Wings' net soon

Jimmy Howard was back on the ice with his teammates Saturday morning, laughing and lamenting how hard it is to tie his shoes at the moment. He has a fractured right index finger, which has left that digit bandaged and immobile. While the injury will take four to six weeks to heal, Howard estimated he'd only miss two weeks.

Detroit Red Wings (35-16-2) at Phoenix Coyotes (23-21-8), 8 p.m. (ET)

Not having their starting goaltender over the weekend did little to help Detroit shake off its road issues. However, a trip to Phoenix just might do the trick.
