Found June 16, 2013 on Kukla's Korner:
The Red Wings' AHL team so closely resembled its NHL counterpart on Saturday night that I was waiting for Larry Murphy to emerge from the ether, pop up on the AHL Live broadcast and inform me that the Grand Rapids Griffins' 33 shots over the first two periods of their 5-2 loss to the Lake Erie Monsters on Saturday night resulted in exactly 4 scoring chances. It's not that Cedrick Desjardins has been anything less than spectacular as the Crunch walked into Grand Rapids and both averted a sweep on Thursday and forced the series to move back to Syracuse via their 5-2 win (despite being out-shot 42-22), or that Petr Mrazek's been anything other than ordinary at the other end. It's that the grit, grind and jam that involves going to the net and staying there, obstructing a goaltender's field of vision and driving the other team to distraction while doing so was so absent from the Griffins' penalty-prone, flashy-but-futile efforts on Thursday and Saturday w...

Do You Want Dan Cleary Back?

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press, Will Daniel Cleary be back for an encore with the Red Wings? Talks to that end will heat up in the coming days, about three weeks ahead of July 5, when Cleary can become an unrestricted free agent. The Wings want Cleary back, and Cleary has said he wants to come back, but given the money that gets thrown around every summer...

10 Observations on Detroit Red Wings Prospects From Games 4, 5 of Calder Cup Finals

Petr Mrazek had a tough weekend as the Grand Rapids Griffins dropped a pair of games. Good luck, I am not. I picked up tickets for Games 4 and 5 of the Grand Rapids Griffins’ Calder Cup finals series against the Syracuse Crunch, hoping to see my hometown team celebrate a championship. Unfortunately, the Griffins lost a ref-aided heartbreaker on Friday night, then turned around...

Red Wings forward Damien Brunner auf Deutsch, take two

Last night's translated article from Sport.ch's Tobias Wust apparently originated from a 10-minute interview that Red Wings free-agent-to-be Damien Brunner gave to Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen, and here's a solid translation of their highlighted transcription of the interview (three videos are embeddded in the story, but I'm guessing that you're not going to...

Red Wings’ Niklas Kronwall discusses playoff disappointments, youth movement at MIS 400

Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall is one of the  Grand Marshals at the Quicken Loans 400 at Michigan International Speedway. He bluntly assessed the Cup Final and his lingering bitterness regarding the way the Wings' bowed out to Chicago in the second round: #redwings Kronwall calls #bruins to win Stanley Cup in six games. "They're stronger and more structured...

Drew Miller agrees to a 3-year deal with the Wings

DETROIT (AP) -- Drew Miller really didn't want to leave the Detroit Red Wings to find out what he was worth on the market. Fortunately for him, the Red Wings wanted the defensive-minded, penalty-killing forward back. Miller confirmed Friday he has agreed to a three-year, 4.05 million contract to stay in Detroit. "I'm really happy the deal got done," he said in...

Chelios and Osgood mentor Griffins

Being affiliated with the Detroit Red Wings has turned out nicely for the Grand Rapids Griffins. Detroits top minor league club has a roster filled with premiere Red Wings prospects, an up and coming coaching staff led by head coach, Jeff Blashill, along with assistants, Jim Paek and Spiros Anastas, plus, a few "special assistants" with the last names of Chelios, Osgood...

The award recognizes the NHL player who applies the core values of hockey – commitment, perseverance and teamwork – to enrich the lives of people in his community. Red Wings lend Red Bird III to Griffins

Tomorrow, the Grand Rapids Griffins will head to Syracuse, New York to begin to prepare for a hopefully Calder Cup-clinching Game 6 of their AHL Final series against the Syracuse Crunch (Game 6 will take place on Tuesday and an if-necessary Game 7 would take place on Thursday, with both games held at the Onecenter War Memorial Arena). As the Griffins attempt to rebound from losses...

Red Wings mid-day news: Griffins fly to Syracuse, hope to rebound; recapping Weiss talk

The Syracuse Crunch decided to spend Sunday morning busing back to upstate New York after defeating the Grand Rapids Griffins on Saturday night, but the Griffins were able to take a slightly shorter route as they begin to prepare for Game 6 of the Calder Cup Final: Just boarded Redbird III. How cool of the @Detroitredwings to send their team jet to fly the #Griffins to Syracuse...

Red Wings overnight report: Griffins drop Game 5; recapping a busy Friday; time for ‘the button?’

The Grand Rapids Griffins' 3-2 loss to the Syracuse Crunch in Game 4 of the Calder Cup Final is not the end of the world. It sets up a Game 5 on Saturday night (7 PM EDT, AHLLive.com/WXSP in Grand Rapids/WOOD Radio), and to some extent, it was predictable given that the Griffins are such a young team that had never been on the cusp of a championship. They took the Crunch too...

Travis Yost: On Paul MacLean, Mike Babcock and Doug Wilson

Make sure to follow Travis on Twitter! -- I've been paying quite a bit of attention to the depth of voting for some of the awards, specifically for Coach of the Year and GM of the Year. I think Paul MacLean was the right choice for Coach of the Year, although Chicago's Joel Quenneville was a worthy finalist. Ray Shero winning GM of the Year was puzzling -- I think his...

Red Wings overnight report: on raising summer prospect camp $, Weiss and Brunner auf Deutsch

This entry is going to be a little more rambly than usual, so please bear with me: First and foremost, Pavel Datsyuk is facing off against St. Louis Blues goaltender Jake Allen in TSN's Play of the Year semifinal, and he is trailing by a SIGNIFICANT margin. Voting ends at Midnight EDT on Tuesday (i.e. 11:59 PM on Monday night). There is some good news on Datsyuk's goal...

Signings, Rumors and Griffins Updates

A lot has happened since the last time I posted something. I know I said that we’d keep you up to speed, then pretty much disappeared. Oops. Won’t happen again. Until it does. Updates after the jump: If you haven’t been paying attention, the Griffins have a 3-2 series lead on the Syracuse Crunch. That’s great, but they were up 3-0 and have let the Crunch, an unbelievably...

Grand Rapids Griffins-Syracuse Crunch Game 5 open post: Blashill offers takes on 12 prospects

The Grand Rapids Griffins get a second chance to close out the Syracuse Crunch tonight (7 PM EDT, AHLLive.com/WOOD TV8 in Grand Rapids/WOOD Radio), and they'll do so minus Adam Almquist but including Gustav Nyquist, who the Grand Rapids Press's Peter J. Wallner reports was not suspended for whatever happened between Nyquist and Richard Panik last night. The Crunch expect...

Griffins have to board the bus back to Syracuse after dropping Game 5

The Grand Rapids Griffins ran into a goaltender playing otherworldly hockey in Cedric Desjardins, but also battled against a pair of soft goals given up by their own goaltender (a bizarrely shaky Petr Mrazek), poor defensive play and, despite the wild disparity in shots--42-22 for Grand Rapids--a staggering an inabilty or unwillingness to reduce Desjardins' field of vision as...
