Two Red Wings alumni, Brendan Shanahan and Kirk Maltby, suggested to the Sporting News’s Craig Custance that the Wings’ 1997 Cup-winning team could defeat the 2002 team listed in the Sporting News’s top 10 NHL teams list (which is now up for fan voting, as is the number 19 in USA Today’s All-Time greatest numbers poll), and in light of the alums’ comments, the Detroit News’s Ted Kulfan asked the currently-playing alums from the 97 team whether the 02 team could match up:
