This isn't necessarily surprising: the Macomb Daily's Diana Dillaber Murray took note that the Red Wings' "School Assembly Program," a charitable initiative, is continuing to roll along despite the looming lockout. The only difference that's involved in conducting the program is that the Wings will be relying upon alumni and front office personnel to get the ambassadorial job done, with Kris Draper subbing for active players earlier this week: Former Red Wing hockey player Kris Draper jogged with Holy Name Catholic School students in Birmingham this week as part of the kickoff to the Red Wings School Assembly Program. Children from 115 Detroit Metropolitan Area elementary schools, including almost 30 in Oakland County, can expect players, past and present, from the hockey team to visit this fall thanks to the Detroit Red Wings Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and the Kroger Company of Michigan. Red Wings make their pre-lockout Grand Rapids Griffins roster dump

This was coming, from the Grand Rapids Griffins: The Detroit Red Wings on Friday assigned 22 players to the Grand Rapids Griffins, their American Hockey League affiliate: goaltenders Tom McCollum, Petr Mrazek and Jordan Pearce; defensemen Adam Almquist, Gleason Fournier, Brian Lashoff, Max Nicastro and Brendan Smith; and forwards Joakim Andersson, Louis-Marc Aubry, Damien...

Red Wings afternoon news: preparing for a lockout and Abdelkader/Colaiacovo contract talk

It's definitely a strange day for the Red Wings' players. Carlo Colaiacovo made his first visit to Detroit to sign his contract, Justin Abdelkader was signed to a contract extension, and then the Wings' palyers engaged in their last practice at Joe Louis Arena before packing up their ice, watching or at least hearing the ice disappear and then packing up their gear...

Red Wings Re-sign Justin Abdelkader to 4-year Deal

The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed forward Justin Abdelkader. The deal is for four years and worth $7.2 million, as reported by the Detroit Free Press. “It’s nice to get it done,” Abdelkader said. “It’s great security. I’m thrilled, excited about the opportunity that they believe me in to sign me for four years. It’s awesome coming out here each day and putting the...

Detroit Red Wings ink Colaiacovo

Try as they may, the Detroit Red Wings weren’t going to be able to fully fill the hole in their defense left by Nicklas Lidstrom. When quite possibly the best defenseman ever leaves the team, a void is left that can only be patched, not filled. GM Ken Holland and the Detroit Red Wings patched that hole on Thursday by signing defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo. Colaiacovo, formerly of...

Red Wings sign Abdelkader, Colaiacovo

The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed forward Justin Abdelkader to a four-year, $7.2 million contract and signed defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo to a two-year, $5 million deal. The 25-year-old Abdelkader had eight goals and 14 assists in 81 games last season for Detroit. He's played 209 games for the Red Wings over the last five seasons. The 29-year-old Colaiacovo was a free agent...

Red Wings overnight report: talking about the lockout, player mobility and keggers

If the Red Wings do sign Justin Abdelkader to a 4-year contract extension today, or Ken Holland closes a deal with as-yet-unsigned UFA target Carlo Colaiacovo prior to this weekend, he will do so in the most awkward of circumstances. One of the most player-friendly GM's in the game from one of the league's supposedly players-as-family-oriented organizations is in fact attending...

Done and done by Ken Holland: Red Wings re-sign Justin Abdelkader, sign Carlo Colaiacovo

Via RedWingsFeed, I'm sure the signings of these actual contacts will be quite awkward given that Ken Holland voted on behalf of the Red Wings to lock the following two players out, and aside from informally assigning Brendan Smith, Gustav Nyquist and Damien Brunner to Grand Rapids, MLive's Ansar Khan notes that the Red Wings made some final personnel moves on Thursday...

Detroit Makes Colaiacovo Signing Official

Detroit, MI... Detroit Red Wings Executive Vice President and General Manager Ken Holland today announced that the team has signed free agent defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo to a two-year deal.  In accordance with team policy, additional terms of the contract were not disclosed.   Colaiacovo, 29, was originally a first-round selection (17th overall) of the Toronto Maple Leafs in...

Red Wings evening news: more European player option news, Griffins stuff and a PA meetings roster

As noted by several Red Wings beat writers yesterday, after the Wings' players engage in their final practice at Joe Louis Arena tomorrow and pack their bags, we know that players like Jakub Kindl, Cory Emmerton and Jan Mursak will head to Europe, as they told the Detroit News's Ted Kulfan, with some of the Wings' equally young, single, inexpensive-to-insure and, well...

Detroit Red Wings’ Justin Abdelkader Discusses His New Contract: Video

We're not sure when the Detroit Red Wings will be on the ice because of the pending NHL lockout, but when they return, Justin Abdelkader will be with them. Continue reading →

Red Wings overnight report: one last ‘normal’ day

And now things get really weird, even by TMR standards. Half of the Detroit Red Wings' players took part in the NHLPA's player meetings in New York on Thursday night, and the re-signed Justin Abdelkader and his teammates will engage in one final practice at Joe Louis Arena today. After they're done, they'll bag up their gear, their skates and sticks, say goodbye...

Red Wings overnight report: welcome to a wacky dichotomy

The ice is gone from Joe Louis Arena's floor, where the Red Wings' players engaged in one final practice before packing up black equipment bags (I'm starting to wonder whether the players were handed NHLPA jerseys at the players' meetings in New York given Chris Stevenson's report that the Oilers had to surrender their practice jerseys at the end of their skate...

The Detroit News: Cleveland Is A Look Into Detroit’s Past

Tom Gage of The Detroit News wrote an opinion column for today’s paper that took a retrospective at how the Detroit sports landscape used to be and how it compares to Cleveland at this time. While focusing primarily on baseball with the Tribe and Tigers squaring off this weekend, it touches on all three teams. But like the “Twilight Zone” episode in which a commercial jet flies...
