Via RedWingsFeed, the Grand Rapids Griffins’ website reports that the Red Wings essentially made two more signings that won’t count against their 50-man roster limit (the team’s already at 47 players) by following up their inking of Luke Glendening to an AHL-only contract with the signings of two AHL veterans to similar deals: The Grand Rapids Griffins on Monday signed defenseman Nathan Paetsch (PAY-tch) and left wing Triston Grant to one-year contracts. Paetsch, 29, is a former AHL All-Star (2005-06) who brings four seasons of NHL experience to the Grand Rapids blueline, having played 167 games with the Buffalo Sabres and Columbus Blue Jackets from 2005-10. The LeRoy, Saskatchewan, native was fourth among NHL rookie defensemen with 24 points (2-22—24) for the Sabres in 2006-07 and has totaled 42 points (7-35—42) and 114 penalty minutes in his NHL career.Continue reading "Red Wings smartly skirt 50-man roster limit by signing Paetsch, Grant to AHL deals"

Awesome news: Nicklas Lidstrom has taken the Red Wings up on their job offer

I just got in to Traverse City, so I’ll have more on this later, but, via NHL Gossip on Twitter, here is former Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom speaking to Aftonbladet’s Angelica Lundberg about the one exception he will make to the, “I just want to be a hockey dad” rule: Question: What will you do to occupy yourself? Nicklas Lidstrom: “I will work for the Red Wings...

Red Wings summer development camp, day 2 afternoon session: working out and talking to Mike Babcock

There are two ways to start this entry, and I’m going with them both: 1. About ten minutes into Grand Rapids Griffins assistant coach Jim Paek’s drills with the “afternoon group,” which happened to be “Team Lidstrom,” I was taken back to my childhood by a torrent of f-bombs so loud, so sharply spoken and so eloquently used as nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and even...

Red Wings mid-day news: digging into a Hockeytown defense and preparing for Bryan Rufenach day

Waking up with a start after a surprisingly poor night’s worth of sleep, I see that the Minneapolis Star-Tribune’s Howard Sinker mocking a certain part of the Oakland Press’s Pat Caputo’s suggestion that failing to land Zach Parise and Ryan Suter does not in fact mark the end of the world as we know it… [I]n retrospect, it may turn out to be the best thing that could have...

Red Wings development camp, day 2, morning session: increasing the degree of difficulty

I’m currently typing from the “mezzanine” separating the two rinks at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City, and I’m trying to be as inconsipicuous as possible while Aaron Downey and Wings capologist Ryan Martin work their tails off with kettlebells, lunges and jumps, a rope pull while standing on a ball and lifts and drops of those barbells that look more like telephone poles—as...

Red Wings summer development camp, day 1, morning session: getting off on the right foot

On a suspiciously quiet day in Traverse City—it may be Sunday, but during the Cherry Festival, I’d expect both rinks at Centre Ice Arena to be hopping with activity, not with one rink darkened, the rink the Red Wings’ prospects use “blocked off” from concourse view via what are essentially tarps, and certainly not with the concession stand closed—the Detroit Red Wings’...

Red Wings morning report: on courting Doan, the Semin rumor and prospect talk

The Red Wings and almost a dozen other NHL teams will begin pursuing a prototypical power forward today, someone who can add size, grit and especially goal-scoring acumen to the equation…And his name is Shane Doan. The Free Press’s Helene St. James isn’t sure whether Doan is really willing to leave Phoenix, despite his declaration that the potential ballot initiative designed...

St. James: Red Wings have contacted Shane Doan

I just told Mike Babcock that I don’t start fires despite being a blogger (Babcock does not have a high opinion of our ilk. Also: he’s ridiculously fit) so here comes the fire, of course, from the Free Press’s Helene St. James: Terry Bross, agent for UFA F Shane Doan, tells Detroit Free Press: “Shane has interest in Detroit.” Has heard from Wings today. #RedWings— Helene...

Red Wings early overnight report: getting up to speed

Before I lay my head down for a few hours and then prepare for that awful 6 AM alarm, here’s a brief summary of the Red Wings news I missed over the past 36 hours. Done a little quickly and on a no-particular order source-by-source basis… Well, okay, except for the beginning. ESPN’s Scott Burnside and Pierre LeBrun had a chat about the Red Wings as potential suitors for Rick...

Red Wings overnight report: talking about Doan, Nash, Mike McKee and Bryan Rufenach Day

Somewhere between posting the news about the Winter Classic alumni game press conference on Wednesday and sharing the Free Press’s Helene St. James’ news about the Red Wings’ overtures to Shane Doan, I kinda got sidetracked and missed Ken Holland’s water-pouring over the Doan rumors due to content-producing reasons. As someone who’s generally all but plugged into their...

Minor signing: Rangers add Logan Pyett

Amidst all the hubbub over the Jeff Halpern signing and Rick Nash trade rumors, the Rangers made another depth move this morning, adding 24-year-old defenseman Logan Pyett to the mix. CapGeek broke the news of the one-year, two-way contract and lists Pyett’s NHL cap hit as $600k and AHL salary as $100k.  Pyett was originally drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the seventh round...
