The Wings connect once on the PP, but ultimately fall 3-1 to the Coyotes. Red Wings also gave up a shorty and a PP goal of their own. As Bo Schembechler would say, "Special! Teams! Killed us!"Jump for the full recap:
Joey MacDonald deserved better, in my biased opinion. He didn't give up any bad goals, but other than that, there was no difference between him starting and Conklin starting in that the team played poor in front of him. Yet again the guys tried to win with one goal in front of the backup. Not going to happen. The Wings continue to lose to non-playoff teams. Montreal, Edmonton and now Phoenix. Losing to non-playoff teams isn't an issue in the playoffs, but getting home ice throughout is hard to do when you lose to trash teams. Detroit had a terrible time gaining control of the puck when dumping it in. Mike Smith is a pain to play against because he just sends it right back in your face. A few soft dumps into the corners would have helped. Or just let ...

1,200 and counting for Coyotes' Whitney
Ray Whitney will play his 1,200th NHL game tonight against Detroit. If my calculations are correct, hes one of just 91 players to achieve that milestone.
That doesnt mean he has a bottle of champagne at the ready in the Coyotes locker room.
A thousand is the big one, Whitney said. After that, it just means youre getting old.
It also means youve stayed healthy and youre pretty...
Talking about the post-Nicklas Lidstrom Red Wings
Sportsnet’s Mark Spector penned an intriguing column regarding the Red Wings’ future as Nicklas Lidstrom approaches the end of his career, talking about the team’s desire to remain elite even when Lidstrom eventually hangs ‘em up with Wings GM Ken Holland:
“I’m big on defencemen, and I think Nick has been the best at his position,” begins...

Dirty Wings
from Open Ice Hitter at the StarPhoenix, - Interesting how the sports news crews and broadcasters refer vaguely to Patrick Sharp’s wrist injury …. Avoiding the mention of Jiri Hudler’s name, or the fact the Detroit Red Wing worm smashed Sharp’s wrist with a vicious slash …. Where is this going ? Yup. TO Brendan Shanahan … ex Detroit Red...
Detroit Red Wings (35-16-2) at Phoenix Coyotes (23-21-8), 8 p.m. (ET)
Not having their starting goaltender over the weekend did little to help Detroit shake off its road issues. However, a trip to Phoenix just might do the trick.

A few updates from the morning skate at Joe Louis Arena: Joey MacDonald will, as expected, start against the Oilers, and Danny Cleary is also in despite a sore left knee.
The Washington Generals
Remember during last years playoffs when Doc Emrick referred to the Phoenix Coyotes as the Washington Generals (to the Red Wings’ Harlem Globetrotters).
That was pretty cool.

PHX – 5 SJ – 3 F
After a disappointing start to the second half of the season, the Coyotes continued their homestand Saturday night against the Pacific Division leading San Jose Sharks. The Coyotes have been struggling in many phases of the game recently and they were in need of someone to step up and make a big game-changing play. Lauri Korpikoski answered that call. Twice...
