It was 1942 and the world was at war. The United States had entered World War II just four months earlier, and Canadian forces had been dispersed throughout Europe since Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939. But more importantly, the Maple Leafs had dropped the first three games of the Stanley Cup Finals to the Detroit Red Wings.
