Henrik Zetterberg is expected to be the new captain of the Detroit Red Wings. Photo Credit: Wikipedia Commons For the first time since 2006, the Detroit Red Wings will have a new captain. Following the retirement this past summer of defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom, who wore the “C” for Detroit from 2006-12, the Red Wings needed a new captain. And reportedly they’ve found one: forward Henrik Zetterberg. Zetterberg, a 32-year-old Swede, has played his entire career with Detroit. He’s entering his 10th year with the franchise, after making the team in 2002 after being selected in the seventh round of the 1999 draft (210th overall). His best season came in 2007-08, when he posted career highs in goals (43) assists (49) and total points (92), and was named MVP of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as Detroit won the Cup. For his career, Zetterberg has 624 points in 668 games. The NHL season is expected to begin within the next few weeks, now that the lockout has pretty much ended.
