Following 17 years in the NHL, three of which were with the Minnesota Wild, forward Brian Rolston officially announced his retirement on Tuesday. Rolston, who is fifth in Wild history with 202 points, didn't play this season. He spent his final year in 2011-12 with the New York Islanders and Boston Bruins. Rolston, a first-round draft choice by the New Jersey Devils in 1991, is a four-time 30-goal scorer and won a Stanley Cup championship with New Jersey. The NHL players' association announced the retirement Tuesday in a press release. Rolston, 40, finished his career with 342 goals and 419 assists for five teams. "Getting the chance to play the game I love for 17 years has truly been a dream come true," Rolston said in the release. "My career has taken me to many great places where I had the privilege to play with some exceptional teammates and in the best league in the world. The memories of all my experiences will certainly stick with me for the rest of my life. I am grateful for the overwhelming support of my friends, family and fans throughout my career." Rolston, known for a hard slap shot and a strong two-way game, joined Minnesota as a free agent in 2004, reuniting with coach Jacques Lemaire, who he won the Stanley Cup with in New Jersey. The NHL lockout in 2004-05 meant Rolston didn't play for his new team until 2005-06, when he led Minnesota with 79 points (34 goals and 45 assists). He scored more than 30 goals each season with the Wild and is fifth in team history with 96 goals. He also had 106 assists for Minnesota and was a plus-19 in a Wild sweater. A Michigan native, Rolston played for Team USA in the Olympics three times and was a member of the silver medal-winning team in 2002. Follow Brian Hall on Twitter.
