GLENDALE, AZ - OCTOBER 10: Rick Nash #61 of the Columbus Blue Jackets skates up to a face off during the NHL game against the Phoenix Coyotes at Jobing.com Arena on October 10, 2009 in Glendale, Arizona. The Blue Jackets defeated the Coyotes 2-0. (Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)
Larry Brooks at the New York Post reports that U. of Wisconsin free agent Justin Schultz is the first defenseman on the market the Rangers will target, but if the he goes elsewhere, the Blueshirts are more likely to investigate the feasibility of trading for Nashville's restricted free agent Shea Weber than going after Predators unrestricted free agent Ryan Suter with a huge offer.

...a bit surprised to see the Rangers more interested in the inexperienced Schultz over Weber. But I guess this goes along with their philosophy to go with youth, which obviously I'm not complaining about.

...would still love to see Weber bombing away from the blueline on the power play though.

Meanwhile, Aaron Portzline at the Columbus Dispatch feeds our appetite for Rick Nash news by saying that the Rangers are still the #1 team to land the Blue Jackets All Star forward this offseason.

...Columbus GM Howson wants a King's ransom for Nash, and I refuse to believe Sather is willing to pay it. Also, for those of you who think the Rangers can get Nash for Dubinsky, Del Zotto and a #1, think again.

...for the record, I'm still against acquiring Nash unless Howson drops his price tag dramatically.

To Rangers free agent news, Jim Matheson at the Edmonton Journal reports that the Oilers could use Brandon Prust if the Rangers allow him to hit the open market on July 1.

...the Oilers are very familiar with Prust from his time with the Flames, so it wouldn't surprise me if they have interest.

...having said that, I would be shocked if the Rangers and Prust can't agree on a deal. Prust is a Torts guy, plus do you really think he wants to go from dating models while living in Manhattan to Western Canada? C'mon.

Athlete Ally, a non-profit organization dedicated to challenging homophobia in sports, has announced that Sean Avery has joined the board of directors.

Avery will help further the mission of Athlete Ally by encouraging more straight athletes to start speaking out against homophobia in athletics.

...so how long until Avery announces he's gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

As part of the ongoing MSG transformation, this fall Rangers fans will be treated to a "Memorable Moments Every Day" visual retrospective in the expanded Madison Concourse (6th Floor) that brings to life one moment in Garden history for every day of the year.  The retrospective will wrap the entire circumference of the Arena, creating a visual calendar of The Garden's rich history.

In addition, 20 of The Garden's "Defining Moments" will be commemorated on the Madison Concourse and Garden Concourse (8th Floor) through special exhibits that will feature photos, memorabilia and additional artifacts, representing each of these amazing moments in Garden history.

...really looking forward to seeing this. MSG looked very generic after the first phase of the transformation last year, so this will be a welcomed change.

Finally, good friend of the blog Jess Rubenstein at The Prospect Park informs us on the reserve list or as it's more commonly referred to "the 50 contract list"...

"...there are currently 15 contracted players on the Ranger roster, another 16 (it should be 17 with the signing of Hrivik) who are seen as non-roster, and then the 11 restricted free agents (RFAs) that the Rangers might/might not tender qualifying offers to.

You will see JT Miller's name highlighted in yellow. And what that means is that Miller can be kept with the Rangers, sent to the Whale or he can be sent back to his junior team.

If Miller is set back to his junior team then his contract becomes a future contract and doesn't count towards the 50 contract limit."

...something for everyone to keep in mind this offseason.
