In another moment that signals forward progress towards the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, news today form the Edmonton Journal says that Ryan Whitney will be out for the remainder of the season following successful surgery on his ankle.

Whitney was putting together what could have turned into a 70+ point season when he got his skates tangled and tore an ankle tendon.

Suffice to say that Whitney was Edmonton’s rock on defence this year, and it was a huge blow to any chance the team had at finishing near .500.

Whitney has been out of the lineup since the end of December.   The defence carousel will likely continue to rotate, although I’m really liking what I see from Jeff Petry so far as now.

Oilers will take on the Minnesota Wild tonight in their first of a three game homestand.  Will Devan Dubnyk steal the show and snag the Oilers a home victory?
