Buffalo's Jhonas Enroth recorded his first shutout of the season by making 34 stops to lead the Sabres to a 1-0 win over the reeling Carolina Hurricanes on Friday night.
Jason Pominville scored for Buffalo, which lost top goaltender Ryan Miller to a concussion Nov. 12 against Boston. .
Enroth, Buffalo's second-round draft pick in 2006, got his second career shutout.
Carolina has lost seven of its last eight games to sink to the bottom of the Southeast Division standings and prompt speculation about the job security of coach Paul Maurice.
Back-up goalie Brian Boucher made 19 saves for the Hurricanes while starting in place of Cam Ward. Boucher has yet to post a win this season.
Pominville extended his point streak to six games midway through the first period. With the Sabres on the power play, Pominville finished a scramble in front of Boucher by smacking a rebound into the top-right corner of the net.
Pominville has three goals and five assists during his streak.
Thomas Vanek got an assist on the play for his eighth point (three goals, five assists) in his last six games. Vanek and Pominville have combined on a goal 19 times this season.
Despite the team's struggles, Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford said Thursday he had no plans to make any major changes. The Hurricanes have scored nine goals in their last seven losses.
Carolina had few golden scoring chances, although Enroth made a nice glove stop on Eric Staal's wrist shot early in the third period.
The Sabres, who have the third-best penalty kill in the league, did have to kill a late Carolina power play.
It was only the third time this season the Hurricanes had allowed fewer than two goals.
Notes: Buffalo hosts Phoenix on Saturday night. The Sabres lead the NHL with 21 back-to-back games this season. . Carolina's Anthony Stewart played after being scratched the previous three games.

Why Jhonas Enroth Won’t Win the Calder
By Alexander Monaghan
President
Jhonas Enroth backstopped the Buffalo Sabres to yet another win tonight, shutting out the below-average Carolina Hurricanes offense. The rookie has now won seven of his 10 appearances, improving his already stellar 2.19 GAA and .926 SV% to 1.94 GAA and .935 SV%. Without those wins the Sabres most certainly would not be sitting atop the Northeast Division...

Kevin Freiheit: Sabres got his back?
Throughout this season, we've heard discussions about the Buffalo Sabres playing differently in front of Ryan Miller than Jhonas Enroth.
Now we have witnessed the team's response after Miller was absolutely demolished by a player with 50 pounds on Miller: Nothing. I would have expected a bench clearing brawl for a hit of that magnitude. But no. Nothing.

GAME RECAP: Sabres 1 @ Hurricanes 0
My inner Homer Simpson gave a little “woo-hoo!” at the end of this game. The Buffalo Sabres (12-7-0) once again shook off a big loss and responded with a good win. In this case, they defeated the Carolina Hurricanes (6-11-3) 1-0 in Carolina. Jhonas Enroth got the shutout victory for the Sabres by stopping all 34 shots that he faced.

Jhonas Enroth will make his third start in row in relief of Ryan Miller. Back to back games shouldn't be a concern for the young Swede. Earlier in the week Enroth commented that he is not fatigued in any way right now.

GAME PREVIEW – Coyotes @ Sabres (Saturday, November 19, 2011)
What reward did the Buffalo Sabres (12-7-0) earn with a hard fought victory in Carolina on Friday night? Why, the right to run right home to Buffalo to face the Phoenix Coyotes (9-5-3) on Saturday night. If this sounds like a familiar scenario, that’s because it is. 2011-12 marks the second straight season where the Sabres play the most back-to-back games in the NHL.

So much for starting a serious home stand with a win.
