Tyler Myers has come to the realization he still has plenty of room to grow.
At 6-foot-8, the Buffalo Sabres defenseman isn't going to get any taller. What Myers acknowledged Friday is that he spent the offseason addressing his mental approach to rebuild his confidence. That's something the 23-year-old felt was necessary after he fell short of meeting expectations playing his first season under a $38.5 million, seven-year contract.
Something had to change, after Myers struggled at both ends of the ice in managing three goals and eight points in 39 games.
The 2010 NHL rookie of the year concentrated on developing what he described as mental-training techniques to avoid the familiar pitfalls of self-doubt that lingered after a bad game.
Myers called it a step in the right direction.

from John Vogl of the Buffalo News,
Tyler Myers can chuckle about it now, but he was a beaten man last season. He was a physical wreck, a mental disaster. It showed nearly every time he stepped on the ice or up to a microphone.
Something had to give. Actually, pretty much everything had to give.
“You have a year like you did last year, you want to change some things...
from John Vogl of the Buffalo News,
Miller apparently will remain in Buffalo through the start of the regular season. General Manager Darcy Regier says the trade window is closed throughout the NHL, so Thomas Vanek and Miller should be wearing Blue and Gold when the puck drops Oct. 2.
“The season begins and talks start again,” Regier said. “We’re approaching it from...
It's just a good old fashioned case of damned if you do, damned if you don't.
Many of the same armchair Sabres owners who lambasted Tom Golisano for his one-year contract per player fantasy, and have seen more than a few good ones leave this town over the years due to lack of commitment from management, are now suddenly telling us that ambitious owner Terry Pegula and the...

With Sabres training camp opening today and competition starting on Sunday there are many storylines surrounding the team as they head into a very important 2013 season.
How will Ron Rolston fair in his first full season?
Rolston took over last February and led the team to a 15-11-5 record in 31 games. He earned the full time position early in the summer...
Early start at Sabres training camp on Friday the 13th.
Ryan Miller has been excused from today's session.
Miller has been inducted and his cousin, former NHLer Kip Miller, have been bestowed with the honoir of being inducted into the Michigan State Unoversity Athletic Hall Of Fame.

Here are the lines for today's practice group and...
I'll preface my comments by saying that i realize that its only Day 1 of sabres training camp.
However, veteran winger Ville Leino looked very good to me during today's scrimmage. I'm impressed with full-go, high tempo approach. His surgically repaired hip and lung ailment are fully healed to the point where the Finn looks like his old self again.
Sekera on the change from Buffalo to Raleigh: “I think everything is better than Buffalo.”
— Chip Alexander (@ice_chip) September 12, 2013
This off-season Andrej Sekera was dealt from Buffalo to Carolina in return for Jamie McBain and a 2nd Round Pick. Sekera had spent his whole career to that point with the Sabres, but that doesn’t mean he liked living in The Queen City...
I have to say it's been really nice to see good guy Henrik Tallinder back on the ice in a Buffalo Sabres practice sweater. The former Sabres D has proven that you can go home again. Tallinder signed as a free agent with the New Jersey Devils. His hair has thinned a bit and he's showing a few grey hairs in his predominantly dirty blonde mane.
He's three years older...
Cody Hodgson is under the weather on this first day of training camp. Doesn't matter. With new contract in hand, CoHo took the ice for his first skate on Thursday.
"Its great. I'm excited to get started".
CoHo said that he never had a doubt in his mind about getting his new deal completed.
"(On Tuesday) I was here (in Buffalo), for physicals and...
It was just a matter of time before it was done. As you know by now, the Sabres signed Cody Hodgson to a 6 year extension worth $25.5 million.
One of the first comments I saw online about the deal was that the Sabres are offering all of this money to a guy who has 77 career points in the NHL. This is true, but I don't think it's a bad deal at all.
I'm a big fan...
It's time to choose a captain. With less than three weeks to go, the Sabres have yet to determine who will be their captain this season. Ron Rolston said that he would rotate the "C" throughout the preseason and training camp, but still has yet to decide who will get it permanently.
My choice is Steve Ott. Out of the entire team, he is the most fit for...
