At the beginning of February I picked Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks as the Selke Trophy leader.  He has been out with a concussion since the middle of February, thus he is no longer my pick.  I think the best defensive forward in the league so far this year has been Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins.  Bergeron is tied for the NHL lead with a +33 +/- rating.  He plays against tough competition, spends significant time killing penalties and gets as many defensive zone starts as any Bruin forward.  He is a key cog of the Bruins defence.  I think he has had more defensive value to his team than any other forward this season. Chicago Blackhawks’ Jonathan Toews coming to terms with concussion

Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews thought he’d be playing by now. He thought he was healing quickly from a concussion suffered last month. It takes time, however. And, lately, he’s come to terms to realize what it takes to overcome a concussion, and what not to do to fall into the same trap as players like Sidney Crosby. From the Chicago Tribune: “It was...

Patrice Bergeron, Adam McQuaid, Max Sauve Added to Bruins' Growing List of Injuries in Costly Loss to Penguins

After finally winning back-to-back games for the first time in nearly two months, the Bruins have now lost two straight for the second weekend in a row. But Sunday's 5-2 setback in Pittsburgh cost the Bruins more than just two points in the standings. It also added three more players to the club's ever-growing injured list. Defenseman Adam McQuaid was the first to go down...

Patrice Bergeron's Injury a Cause for Concern Despite Bruins' Optimism Regarding Forward's Status (Video)

Patrice Bergeron is "hopeful" that he'll be ready to suit up when the Bruins take on the Lightning in Tampa Bay on Tuesday. However, despite he and the club's optimism, as well as the negative X-rays, it's a bit scary when your best two-way player is battling through soreness. NESN's Mark Mowers said he once dealt with a foot injury, so he understands what...

Patrice Bergeron's Injury Looms Large as Bruins Suffer 'Hart, Broken' Wrath of Evgeni Malkin, Penguins (Video)

If you dreamt up a worst-case scenario for what could happen on Sunday during the Bruins-Penguins game, you might have come pretty close to what actually happened. The Penguins jumped on the B's early and never looked back. What's worse, Patrice Bergeron, Adam McQuaid and Johnny Boychuck all ended up hurt, leaving the B's even more shorthanded than they were heading into...

All Part Of The Process

from Adam L. Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times, Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville wouldn’t say that center Jonathan Toews suffered a setback as he recovers from a concussion. But Toews didn’t skate for the second consecutive day Tuesday after taking the ice four days in a row and sounding very optimistic about his return. “He’s here. He’s getting treatments,” Quenneville...

Patrice Bergeron 'Hopeful' of Playing Tuesday in Tampa As Bruins Continue to Deal With Deluge of Injuries

Maybe at this point, Claude Julien could just save time and list the players on his roster that are still healthy. The Bruins added three more names to their ever-growing injured list during Sunday's loss in Pittsburgh, and were fortunate not to add a fourth. After arriving in Tampa on Monday, Julien offered some updates on the condition of his banged-up squad while preparing...

Kings-Blackhawks Preview

The Chicago Blackhawks have managed to stay on track for a fourth consecutive postseason berth despite the absence of Jonathan Toews. With their captain likely out again Sunday night but possibly returning soon, the Blackhawks look to end their scoring woes against the Los Angeles Kings. Toews, who has 57 points in 59 games, hasn't played since Feb. 19 for what's officially...

Patrice Bergeron, Shawn Thornton, Chris Kelly Among Bruins Forwards Who Would Make Good Defensemen (Video)

The Bruins generally have plenty of consistency when it comes to their defensive pairings. Sure, there's moving parts in the wake of injuries and other unforeseen events, but Boston's defensemen typically have an idea of who they're going to be playing alongside. The B's find this to be beneficial, as it helps to have an idea of what to expect and how to play certain...

Milan Lucic Reveals Another Brad Marchand Nickname, Considers Patrice Bergeron 'Sneaky Tough' (Video)

Milan Lucic is no stranger to dropping the mitts, which is one of the reasons he was recently voted the toughest player in the NHL by his peers. But Lucic was still impressed by Dennis Seidenberg's recent bout with Toronto's Colby Armstrong, during which the German defenseman more than held his own. But that got us wondering which "non-fighter" could be the next...

Marty Turco to Get First Start with Bruins, Daniel Paille Returns, Patrice Bergeron, Adam McQuaid Game-Time Decisions Against Lightning

Marty Turco was impressive enough in relief to earn his first start as a Bruin. Turco put in two solid periods of work on Sunday after replacing Tim Thomas against the Penguins, and will get a chance to play a full game Tuesday night when the Bruins take on the Lightning. "I think it's time for him to come in there and help us out," Bruins coach Claude Julien told reporters...

Bruins Call Up Trent Whitfield. I'm Dead Serious, Again

The Bruins have called up Trent Whitfield from Providence to be used on an emergency basis. This could be because Patrice Bergeron and Max Suave left the Bruins game against the Penguins on Sunday. Or it's because the Bruins and AMC are partnering to promote The Walking Dead and figured that this is the perfect time to do it. Also, Haggs dropped this lovely tweet on our asses...
