With only a week to the Senators’ training camp there are no guarantees Jared Cowen will be there. While 26 prospects will be on the ice Wednesday before heading to London Ont. for the rookie tournament the Senators have work to do if they expect the restricted free-agent defenceman to be on-hand when camp opens next Wednesday. Though Cowen’s agent Rick Valette has insisted through the summer he expected to get a deal in place he admitted Tuesday the two sides have work to do if one of the club’s top defencemen is to get signed. Though most of Cowen’s teammates have arrived in town he’s stayed behind in Saskatoon to continue his preparations and won’t be arriving in Ottawa until there’s a deal in place. It’s doubtful Cowen will come to camp without a contract. Senators assistant GM Tim Murray and Valette have been working on a deal for the past month but haven’t had any talks since Friday. “The talks are ongoing. We’re continuing to work on the deal. We’re trying to bridge the gap” said Valette. Valette refused to get into details on where the two sides sit in talks with Cowen coming out of an entry-level contract. The Senators and Cowen’s camp have looked at every scenario but a one-year deal has been ruled out. As reported by the Sun the Senators tabled an eight-year $28-million deal with a cap hit of $3.5 million per season. The two sides also talked about the seven-year $28-million deal signed by Travis Hamonic of the Isles.
