Per Arizona Sports, free agent winger Shane Doan is in New York to meet with Rangers' management and discuss a potential deal to bring him to the team. Doan had waited to see if Phoenix could clear up its ownership situation but is apparently tired of waiting. New York is his first visit as a free agent.

Unless you have an irrational hatred of Shane Doan, this is excellent news for Rangers fans. It's not secret that the Rangers could use some additional scoring from the wing and getting a player of Doan's caliber this late into the summer is almost unheard of. Since the 1999-2000 season, Doan has scored at least 20 goals every single season except for 2009-2010, in which he only scored 18. Last season he potted 22 goals in 79 games and had nine points in 16 playoff games. And you have to think he could increase those numbers with Brad Richards or Derek Stepan centering him; both better playmaking centers than Phoenix had to offer. And while he is, at this point in his career, a notch below Rick Nash, he would cost the Rangers absolutely nothing except cap space; no young players would have to be sacrificed. While Doan reportedly would like to stay west, you have to think that New York is appealing to him; an awesome city and a young team that could and should be making a few runs at the Stanley Cup.

Don't purchase a Doan jersey just yet, but we are definitely one step closer to him coming to Broadway. A week ago, the prospects of Doan signing with the Rangers were purely speculatory, but there is now legitimate reason to believe he just might end up in New York.
