Patrick Marleau scored the tiebreaking goal with 1:53 remaining for his third straight two-goal game, helping the San Jose Sharks rally from a two-goal deficit to beat the Phoenix Coyotes 5-3 in their home opener Thursday night. Logan Couture and Marty Havlat also scored and Joe Thornton had three assists and an empty-net goal for the Sharks, who have opened the season with three straight wins for the first time since 2008-09. Antti Niemi made 32 saves. Steve Sullivan, Antoine Vermette and Lauri Korpikoski scored for the Coyotes, who were unable to hold onto a 3-1 lead in the third period on the back end of a back-to-back. Marleau started San Jose's comeback with a goal midway through the third and then beat Jason LaBarbera for the game-winner. Thornton started the play with a sharp up-ice pass to Joe Pavelski, who fed Marleau for the wrist shot. The Coyotes seemed to take control with two goals in a span of 2:27 of the third to take a 3-1 lead. The outburst started when Sul...

Putting Patrick Marleau’s hot start in perspective

Nobody in the NHL is having a better start to the season than Patrick Marleau.  The Sharks have started the season 4-0, thanks in large part to Marleau’s torrid pace out of the gate. Marleau added two more goals in the Sharks 4-0 win over the Avs on Saturday to bring to his league-best tally to eight (Chicago’s Marian Hossa follows with five). He’s scored twice in each of...

'Multi' Marleau makes history in SJ win

About the only thing Patrick Marleau is struggling at so far this season is finding an explanation for his record start. Marleau became the second player in NHL history to open a season with four straight multigoal games, striking twice on the power play in the first period Saturday in the San Jose Sharks' 4-0 victory over the Colorado Avalanche. ''I'll keep taking...

Patrick Marleau and the Sharks are making things look easy

When making your MVP predictions for the 2013 NHL season, did you include Patrick Marleau on your list? You can be honest - I didn't either.  Marleau, as well as the bulk of his San Jose teammates, carried rather small expectations into the year following the lockout. For the first time in a long time, seemingly no major outlet considered San Jose to be a true Stanley Cup...

Patrick Marleau: still smokin’

With tedious regularity, Patrick Marleau scores two goals. Of course it's not tedious at all, it's a beautiful thing. Someone should write a song about it. He scores two goals in Alberta, And two in the next game. He scores two goals before he scores two goals and then... Well, we're not to game five yet.  But he's already done something that hasn'...

Marleau scores twice, as usual, as Sharks rally past Coyotes

SAN JOSE -- Patrick Marleau is out to change his reputation as a notoriously slow starter during this lockout-shortened season. For the third consecutive game to start the season, Marleau scored two goals, the latest pair in dramatic fashion as the Sharks rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the final half of the third period for a 5-3 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday night. ...

Marleau Continues To Score

from NHL.com, Patrick Marleau has accomplished something no player has since the inaugural season of the NHL. Marleau scored twice in the first period Saturday for the San Jose Sharks against the Colorado Avalanche, and he has now registered multiple goals in each of the team's first four games this season. He is the first player to start with back-to-back-to-back...

Sharks 4, Avalanche 0

Patrick Marleau became the second player in NHL history to open a season with four straight multigoal games, striking twice on the power play in the first period in the San Jose Sharks' 4-0 victory against the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday. Marleau has scored exactly two goals in each game this season, joining Ottawa's Cy Denneny in 1917-18 as the only players to open a...

What’s got in to Patrick Marleau?

Brad Stuart predicted this. Yesterday, David Pollak published some quotes from Brad Stuart about his career and about the Sharks, what he saw while he was here the first time, and what he saw playing against San Jose later.  One of those answers might explain this mind-boggling start from Team Teal: Pollak: "...wasn’t last year a step backward?" Stuart: ...

Canucks-Sharks Preview

Behind the scorching stick of Patrick Marleau, the San Jose Sharks are one win away from their best start in franchise history. Standing in the way are the Vancouver Canucks, a team they've had trouble with over the past two seasons. The Sharks will try to remain one of the league's three unbeatens Sunday when they host the Canucks, who have 10 of the last 13 meetings including...

Marleau's two power play goals lift Sharks to fourth straight win

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- One big check woke up the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. Defenseman Brad Stuart met Colorado's Gabriel Landeskog with a booming check in open ice, and his Sharks teammates took advantage of retaliation that resulted in power play time for San Jose. Patrick Marleau's two power play goals led the hosts to a 4-0 win over the Avalanche as San Jose won for...

Coyotes blow third-period lead in loss to Sharks

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Patrick Marleau scored the tiebreaking goal with 1:53 remaining for his third straight two-goal game, helping the San Jose Sharks rally from a two-goal deficit to beat the Phoenix Coyotes 5-3 in their home opener Thursday night. Sharks score six 1st period vs. Oilers

The San Jose Sharks' top line is already peaking just two games into the NHL's lockout-delayed season. Patrick Marleau had two goals and an assist and Joe Thornton had three assists as the Sharks won their second in a row, beating Edmonton 6-3 on Tuesday night to spoil the Oilers' home opener. Logan Couture also had two goals and an assist, and Marc-Edouard Vlasic and...
