A weekend home victory over Dallas helped the San Jose Sharks move back into postseason position and put the Stars on the outside of the playoff picture. The Sharks hope to maintain or perhaps better their standing while avoiding a season-high fifth consecutive road loss Tuesday night against the Stars. Part of the crowded and unpredictable Pacific Division, San Jose (40-29-10) holds the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Sharks are one point behind seventh-place Phoenix and three back of division-leading Los Angeles, which is third in the West. "It is a playoff atmosphere," Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle said. "It's exciting." Joe Pavelski scored two goals and Antti Niemi made 22 saves for his sixth shutout of the season as San Jose avoided a third consecutive loss overall and moved back among the top eight teams in the West with a 3-0 home win over Dallas on Saturday. The Sharks, who haven't missed the playoffs since 2003, ar...

Stars momentum drained by its power play

Game 80 of the NHL season came and left Tuesday night with a giant thud for the Dallas Stars. Their dreams of the playoffs for the first time since the glorious spring of 2008 dashed for yet another year. The idea that barring some sort of late season miracle, some of the core vets who were part of that Western Conference Finals team from that year will now play roughly 400 regular...

The Worcester Sharks and the Stockton Thunder play today

The Sharks play the Kings tomorrow.  I don’t know about all Sharks fans but I’ll just hold my breath until then.  It would be nice to have Douglas Murray back in but, as he said, we don’t want him rushing back and having to leave the game again. Sharks fans are still not showing universal, not even majority approval of Niemi’s performance lately.  That bad first goal...

Charting Ice Times: March Edition

It was a tale of two months for the Dallas Stars. They started March on fire by winning six games in a row, their longest such streak of the season. Things kind of fell apart after that though as Dallas would lose six of the next nine games. Their standings reflected that shift in play as they went from division leaders to now sitting in the ninth spot in the Western Conference,...

Sharks Are One Of Five Teams Battling For Three Playoff Spots

from David Pollak of the Mercury News, Make the playoffs and this team still gets to show what it can do when it matters most against the best. Miss the playoffs and every element of the hockey department—from the front office to the coaching staff to the players—could go under the microscope of an ownership group looking for flaws. “Six points that are out there are real...
