BOSTON — Shawn Thornton is someone who usually abides by hockey’s code, but on Saturday night, he obviously crossed the line. Thornton was given a match penalty after attacking Brooks Orpik in the first period of the Bruins’ 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Thornton, looking to gain revenge after a hard hit from Orpik on Loui Eriksson, went after Orpik a few minutes after the hit. Thornton punched Orpik as the Pens defenseman was falling to the ground, and Orpik’s head was driven into the ice. He lay motionless on the ice before being carted off on the stretcher. Thornton was given the aforementioned match penalty, and he’s already been informed he’ll have a hearing with the Department of Player Safety with a suspension looming. After the game, a seemingly distraught Thornton addressed the media and apologized for his actions. Below is a transcript of everything Thornton said after the game. “Listen, I feel awful,” he said. “It wasn’t my intention for that o...

Brooks Orpik Leaves Ice on Stretcher, Shawn Thornton Receives Match Penalty (Video)

Shawn Thornton was ejected in the first period of Saturday’s Bruins-Penguins game at TD Garden after bringing Pittsburgh defenseman Brooks Orpik to the ice and landing a punch to the head. Orpik laid on the ice for several minutes as medical staff attended to him. He was then taken off the ice on a stretcher. Thornton received a match penalty and could face further discipline from...

Video- Shawn Thornton Take Down Of Brooks Orpik

No excuse for what Shawn Thornton did there. Looked to me like he completely lost it after couple borderline hits from Penguins. Cant happen — Joe Haggerty (@HackswithHaggs) December 8, 2013 via NHL.com, Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik was taken off the ice on a stretcher in the first period against the Boston Bruins on Saturday. With play stopped...

GARTH'S CORNER: Throw The Book At Thornton

I'm absolutely disgusted right now. Penguins D Brooks Orpik was mugged by Bruins meat head Shawn Thornton who thought it a wise strategy to slewfoot his unsuspenson victim to take him to the ice, wherein he proceeded to punch his victim in the face. Repeatedly. If this crime happened on the street outside of the TD Bank Gardens, Thornton would be booked in the local jail...

Doesn't look good for Shawn Thornton

I going to predict that that this isn't going to end well for Boston Bruins tough guy Shawn Thornton. Now it's just a matter of how long is the suspension going to be? Again, it doesn't matter if Brooks Orpik caught Loui Erikkson questionable hit early in the game, sending to the locker room with a concussion. The Department of Player Safety won't look at that when...

VIDEO: Shawn Thornton's assault on Brooks Orpik

This is a disgrace. Just a complete disgrace. Shawn Thornton had a vendetta against Orpik after he sent Eriksson into the Harbor on a great hit. First, Thornton accosted Orpik on a shift that gave the Pens a PP that they scored on. Then the above happened. This is just something you do not do. Thornton has been a borderline NHLer his entire career that has somehow lasted this...

Dirty hits mar Penguins tilt with Boston

Brooks Orpik had to be carried off the ice on a stretcher after being attacked by Boston’s Shawn Thornton There are so many story lines that came out of last night’s Penguins/Bruins game that I’m not even sure where to start. Could it be the fact that the Pens blew a 2-1 lead with less than three minutes to go to lose the game 3-2?  Alarming for sure, but no. How about the...

Dirty Play Mars Frantic Ending As Boston Bruins Rally for 3-2 Win Over Penguins

Boston Bruins' fans will remember Saturday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins because of its frantic finish.  Penguins' fans will remember the game because one of their defenseman left the game on a stretcher after a dirty play by a Bruins player. Brooks Orpik was carted off the ice just over halfway through the first period after Bruins' enforcer Shawn Thornton...

Ty Anderson: Dupuis breaks Kelly's leg; Bruins vs. Leafs

And the hits just keep on coming for the Boston Bruins. Losing Shawn Thornton (suspension pending) for his heinous mugging of Pittsburgh's Brooks Orpik and Loui Eriksson (concussion) in last night's physical, thrilling comeback win over the Penguins, the Bruins' man-down count hit three shortly after. With postgame confirmation of a slash that injured Boston’s...

QUICK CAP: Assault on the ice overshadows demoralizing loss

The Bruins tied this with under two minutes to play, and then won it with 13 seconds left. But the final score is secondary to people having to watch Brooks Orpik get assaulted by Shawn Thornton and then having to sit through Boston fans cheer it on. Because Thornton is a Bruin there most likely won't be anything to come of it, and the Boston faithful will probably throw a parade...

Mario Lemieux Was Right in 1992 by @PandaPSU

(Photo courtesy of USAToday.com)After a truly embarrassing display of "hockey" between the Bruins and Penguins Saturday night, the NHL is left to pick up the pieces. The season has already been marred with dirty hits and an ugly goalie fight in the Philadelphia Flyers/Washington Capitals game. What Shawn Thornton did to Brooks Orpik on Saturday night went way beyond any...

Shawn Thorton and James Neal's Acts Continue Embarrassment for the NHL by @MadChad412

I truly love the game of hockey. I love everything about it, the speed, the skill of the professional players, and the hitting that comes along with the game. What I do not love is guys that play the game maliciously assault other players during a sanctioned game. The NHL is a league that hasn't quite figured out that it is it's own worst enemy. While the league has grown...

Penguin stretchered off ice after being punched

Penguins' Orpik lands on injured reserve after attack by Thornton

The Pittsburgh Penguins placed defenseman Brooks Orpik on the injured reserve Monday with a concussion. Orpik was knocked unconscious by Boston's Shawn Thornton in the first period of a 3-2 Bruins' win on Saturday night. Orpik left the ice on a stretcher when Thornton grabbed Orpik from behind, threw him to the ice and punched him. Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said Monday...

Bruins, Penguins Play to Fantastic Finish, But Even That Can’t Overcome Ugly Beginning

BOSTON — The first 11 minutes or so of Saturday night’s game between the Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins was not hockey. That’s not what the game is supposed to be, and it’s not something the NHL — or true hockey fans — should want to promote. With two of the league’s best teams playing on a Saturday night, it should have been a showcase of the best the game has to offer...

Nothing To Do About Fighting?

from Ken Campbell of The Hockey News, The NHL and its many fighting and violence zealots must be so, so proud. Over the next few days, you’re going to hear from them that Shawn Thornton is one of the good guys. They’ll talk about how much character he has and how he visits sick kids in the hospital and what a great team guy he is and how out of character this attack was...
