Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby was injured and missed a few shifts during Pittsburgh’s game against New York Islanders at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Tuesday evening. During a Penguins power play, Crosby skated across the offensive zone, outside the front of the crease toward the circle when a feed inside rode up and struck him in the face. Crosby immediately went down and was quickly attended to by medical personnel and after briefly being treated on the ice was escorted back to the locker room. The injury occurred early on in the second period and Crosby was back on the bench and resumed playing with over 12 minutes remaining in the same period. But what may draw the ire of Penguins fans, not to mention rankle those who find it abhorrent to cheer a player who is injured is that it appears that at least a contingent of Islanders fans in attendance were cheering Crosby’s injury and seem to be chanting “Crosby sucks” as he is being led off the ice. Ouch. Both the puck to the face and the cheering and chanting. That’s low-class behavior there, man. Of course, it wasn’t every Islanders fan, so caution needs to be exercised when criticizing those who did appear to cheer and to ensure that an entire fan base is not castigated due to the acts of a few, but come on, people. Crosby commented on the injury following the game, an outcome much to the chagrin of the same cheering Islanders fans, as the Penguins beat the Islanders by a score of 4-2. Following the game, Crosby had this to say about his injury: “Am I gushing still? I can’t tell,” he said as he dabbed at his nose after the game. “It’s not a very comfortable situation to be in when you’re gushing. “Nice surprise. I’m glad that it’s not broken.” So are Penguins fans, who likely breathed a sigh of relief when they saw Sid the Kid return to the ice.
