Vancouver Canucks captain Henrik Sedin was rattling off a list of the considerable talents of his new linemate Zack Kassian when a suggested comparable froze him like a Zdeno Chara cross check. For everything Kassian may become for all the Canucks are counting on the 22-year-old to be this season a Todd Bertuzzi comparison went too far. "Bert is maybe the best player I've played with it's tough to get up to his level" Sedin cautioned. "But [Kassian] has the same body good hands and he can fly out there. He has all the tools but it's going to be a work in progress." The Canucks are hoping to see signs of it early starting Kassian on the top line with Henrik and twin brother Daniel Sedin in the preseason. New coach John Tortorella is also pledging more patience than the big winger was afforded last season when he scored five goals in the first seven games playing with the Sedins but was soon dropped to the fourth line his minutes and opportunities di...

Canucks' Weise and Kassian have Monday hearing with NHL

Vancouver Canuck forwards Dale Weise and Zack Kassian will be called to the carpet on Monday for events that occurred in Saturday's game against the Edmonton Oilers. Weise will have his hearing with the NHL head office over the phone while the league has requested an in-person hearing with Kassian. Oilers centre Sam Gagner suffered a broken jaw after getting hit with a high...

Canucks: Richardson expected to provide plenty of bite despite missing teeth

As befits his grinding role some teeth are missing from Brad Richardson’s mug. The symbolism isn’t lost on anybody wondering how the centre who was in and out of Darryl Sutter’s doghouse last season in Los Angeles can add bite in Vancouver. The Canucks signed the unrestricted free agent to a bargain two-year $2.3 million US contract on the first day of free agency to help solve...

DeBron’s Top 6 – Top 6 things I WON’T miss about Vancouver

Hi Everybody! A refresher for those who know and an introduction for those who don’t: I used to be the producer of TEAM 1040’s morning show and I used to do a segment called the Top 6. People love lists and the debates they inspire. Without blowing too much smoke up my own ass, the Top 6 was a pretty popular segment. When Rob asked if I’d like to write a top 6 for RobTheHockeyGuy...

Canucks youngsters running out of time to make an impression

So far the kids have only been all right and that must change in the next two pre-season games if any of them are going to crack the Vancouver Canucks’ regular-season roster. Youngsters like Bo Horvat Hunter Shinkaruk Brendan Gaunce and Nicklas Jensen are running out of auditions. Saturday night’s pre-season game in Edmonton (7 p.m. Pacific CBC Team 1040) and Monday night...

Canucks’ beefed-up Tanev seeking bigger role on blue line

Vancouver Canucks defenceman Chris Tanev will never be confused with the Incredible Hulk or Montreal Canadiens wide-bodied defenceman Douglas Murray who is hockey's version of the fictional behemoth. Tanev is tall and slim but at least he is no longer a total string bean. When he signed with the Canucks as an NCAA free agent three years ago Tanev was a featherweight “170 pounds...

Canucks lose more than a pre-season game in Edmonton

The Vancouver Canucks lost more than just their third straight pre-season game Saturday night when they dropped a 5-2 decision to the Edmonton Oilers at Rexall Place. They are also lost three players to injury. Todd Cordell: 2013-14 Western Conference Playoff Predictions

You can follow Todd on Twitter @ToddCordell! Opening night is just 11 days away and with the Vancouver Canucks having an off day, I figured there was no better time for predictions than now. There is so much parity in the NHL these days and almost every team has the talent to make the playoffs, so predicting the standings is pretty much a crap shoot. I'd like to sit here...

Todd Cordell: NHL Gameday Preview: Vancouver Canucks @ Edmonton Oilers

You can follow Todd on Twitter @ToddCordell! The Vancouver Canucks will take on the Edmonton Oilers for the second consecutive game when the two teams square off tonight at Rexall Place. The Oilers won the first of the two meetings decisively so the Canucks will be looking for a better effort this evening. Puck drop is at 7PT/10ET and can be seen on CBC and NHL Network (US...

Zack Kassian to get another look with twins, but does he fit?

John Tortorella is assembling the puzzle pieces that are his Vancouver Canucks and he still doesn’t know just where Zack Kassian fits. It’s clear he’d like Kassian to slide in alongside the Sedin twins on Vancouver’s first line and develop into the type of power forward many project him to be. So far that Kassian puzzle piece hasn’t exactly snapped into place. The 22...

Oilers F Gagner to miss start of regular season

Edmonton Oilers forward Sam Gagner will miss the start of the regular season with a broken jaw. Gagner was hurt in Edmonton's 5-2 exhibition win over the Canucks on Saturday. Gagner collided on the side boards with Vancouver's Zack Kassian, and Kassian's stick knocked out some of Gagner's teeth. Kassian received a four-minute penalty on the play. The team says...
