We’re a few days into the season and we’re already seeing goaltending get impacted by the shortened season. Studs have started out as duds and the meek might be inheriting the goaltending Earth. Players like Cam Ward, Mike Smith and Henrik Lundqvist have just been awful so far. But is it them or the team around them? The reason why Ward’s stat lines are looking more like June Ward are that his defensemen are doing a poor job of helping him out. I reviewed the highlights of the loss to Tampa Bay and noticed this on three of the four goals he allowed. Twice a forward got behind a defender which led to easy goals. The third time, Ward (ESPN ADP: 61) thought he had the puck frozen under him but it popped loose and the blueliners couldn’t find it. Analysis: Ward’s numbers look bad but it’s not his fault. He’s still worth keeping in your lineup. For Smith, his game film didn’t look much better. I checked out the tape against Chicago when he allowed six goals and saw some frightening thing...

Phoenix Coyotes goalie Mike Smith breaks stick after failed save (Video)

Over the weekend, Phoenix Coyotes goalie Mike Smith didn't exactly have the greatest of days as he allowed four goals in a loss to Dallas Stars and then six goals against the Chicago Blackhawks in another close loss. After allowing a sixth goal against the Chicago Blackhawks, Smith had an epic freakout as he broke his stick against the goalpost: Remember Mike, "...

Smith ready to get back on track vs. Columbus

The Phoenix Coyotes rode goaltender Mike Smith to the first division title in franchise history last season, but his struggles are a major reason why the Pacific Division champions are winless in 2012-13. A strong performance from their goalie has the Columbus Blue Jackets off to a surprisingly good start. Phoenix looks to avoid its worst start since relocating to the desert Wednesday...

Canes look to take home opener against the Bolts

Ward defending against FLA's Jonathan Huberdeau (AP) RALEIGH – The Carolina Hurricanes are looking to erase an “Opening Day” loss to Florida in their home opener. The Canes take on the Tampa Bay Lightning at PNC Arena Tuesday night. Puck drops at 7:00pm. This will be the first of five meetings between the Southeast Division rivals in the 48-game, 2012...

Why Torts Pulled Lundqvist

One of the stranger sights in the Rangers 6-3 loss to the Penguins was John Tortorella's early hook on Henrik Lundqvist. He explains his reasoning here (via NY Post)... “I was not going to keep him in there. It wasn’t him. I wasn’t going to keep him in there with what was going on in front of him.” ...i bet Biron felt good about himself after hearing this. In...

NHL Opening Weekend: Goaltending Recap And A Few Bold Predictions

It’s been two days since the start of the NHL season and the biggest storyline seems to be goaltending. Four of the league’s most elite goaltenders were pulled on opening day, including Henrik Lundvist, Jimmy Howard, Cam Ward, and the all-too-ironic Cory Schneider. In addition to the goalies that were pulled, Jonathan Quick let up five goals, something that only happened a handful...

Lightning at Hurricanes game preview

Game time:7 p.m. ETTV: Sun Sports The Carolina Hurricanes couldn't get much going in their first game in more than nine months. Maybe they'll get energized by beginning their home schedule against a Southeast Division rival. Goal Breakdown: Rangers at Flyers

Source: NJ Star Ledger This game could have –and should have– been a blowout for the Flyers. But as usual, Henrik Lundqvist kept the Rangers in it and made it a game. Hank was the best Ranger on the ice n the first period, stopping a lot of quality chances for the Flyers. There was also nothing he could do on both of the Flyer goals in the second period. Flyers 1, Rangers 0 It’s...

Game 2 Scoring Chances: Lightning at Hurricanes

For the second game in a row, the Hurricanes outchanced their opponents only to come out on the losing end of a blowout. Despite outchancing both Florida and Tampa Bay by a combined 40-34 and 32-23 at even strength, the Canes have been outscored 2-9 and now find themselves starting the year with an 0-2-0 record. This is frustrating to watch, but the fact that Carolina has been winning...

Your browser does not support iframes. Via Blueshirts United: “That (No.1) line was just outstanding, and obviously Gaby had the three goals. With those guys leading the way, we come right...

The 3 Best Moments From The NHL’s Return Weekend

Hockey is back! Euphoria is the only emotion I’ve felt the past few days since the return of the NHL last Saturday. As a Blackhawks fan, I have even more to be happy about. The ‘Hawks are off to a hot start, spoiling the Los Angeles Kings’ banner raising ceremony with a 5-2 victory and then enacting revenge on the Coyotes the next day with a 6-4 win. The betrayal that is...
