We now embark on the greatest playoffs in all of sport, the Stanley Cup playoffs, the prize of which brings the toughest of men to tears and stamps and catapults previously solid National Hockey League (NHL) players to legend status. I will analyze the playoff series between each of the NHL Central Division teams participating in the Stanley Cup playoffs – the St. Louis Blues, the Nashville Predators, the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks.  Fortunately for me, the Red Wings and the Predators play each other so that mitigates my overall efforts, which is otherwise known as ‘killing two birds with one stone.’ I begin by analyzing the playoff series between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Phoenix Coyotes. I will also offer my predictions and analysis for the remaining Central Division teams who are participating in the playoffs. The Phoenix Coyotes defied the pundit’s predictions of a precipitous fall from playoff contention after the departure of goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov ...

Coyotes, Blackhawks adjust to lineup changes

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Within the first five minutes of Thursday's Western Conference quarterfinals opener between the Chicago Blackhawks and Phoenix Coyotes, it was clear both teams were playing with a new dynamic. The Blackhawks got Jonathan Toews back after a 22-game absence related to a concussion, and the young center made his presence felt quickly with a goal four minutes...

Special teams key for Coyotes, Blackhawks

GLENDALE, Ariz. When asked the three keys to beating the Phoenix Coyotes in a first-round NHL playoff series, Chicago Blackhawks winger Marian Hossa told reporters: Power play, power play, power play. If either team has to rely on that aspect of their game to advance to the second round, they could be in trouble. Chicago finished the regular season ranked 26th with the man-advantage...

Toews expects to wear target upon return

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- With Jonathan Toews' return from a 22-game absence expected Thursday night, the Chicago Blackhawks captain knows he faces a challenge in shaking off the rust to be effective, but there's another concern. He expects to be a marked man after the lengthy layoff with a concussion. "I don't doubt that that's going to put a target on my back,"...

Jonathan Toews Returns, Blackhawks Lose Game One In OT

Chicago had their captain back on the ice, and Jonathan Toews quickly made his presence known with a first period goal. But a sloppy second period ended with the Blackhawks trailing 2-1 on the road. A frustrating third period saw more struggles … Continue reading →

Coyotes notebook: OEL making himself known

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Lost in the hysteria of the Game 1 WhiteOut, a blown late lead and Martin Hanzals overtime dramatics was that fact that 20-year-old defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson logged a game-high 31 minutes, 14 seconds of ice time. For those doing the math, yes, thats darn near half of Thursdays 69-plus-minute game. I felt pretty good, Ekman-Larsson said. I played with a lot...

Playoff Preview: Phoenix Coyotes vs. Chicago Blackhawks

The Coyotes really have bad luck with drawing the worst possible first round opponents possible as their first round matchup is the Chicago Blackhawks, a team that a lot of people think are good enough to go to the Stanley Cup Finals. That's not to say that Phoenix will be a complete pushover but the matchup doesn't look very good for them at all. There are a couple playoff...

Everyman Smith has Phoenix rolling

(Eds: With AP Photos.) By JOHN MARSHALL AP Sports Writer Mike Smith's frizzy curls jut out from underneath his backward-turned cap in clownish proportions. His beard, which he got a pre-playoff head start on, is spotty up top and trails down his neck like moss. And those suits he wears, wow: red, plaid, you name it, usually accentuating his long, lean frame. See him enter or...

Jonathan Toews Active For Game One

The Blackhawks confirmed on Thursday afternoon that captain Jonathan Toews will play in Game One of their playoff series with the Phoenix Coyotes.

Jonny, Don’t Be A Hero

Jonathan Toews is, depending on who you ask, one of the top young players in the NHL. He’s a two-way star, a Stanley Cup champ, a young captain who wears the C well, and a core Blackhawk that will be in Chicago for a long time . . . . . . especially if he [...]

Blackhawks-Coyotes Preview

In the moments after clinching their first division title in 33 years as an NHL franchise, the Phoenix Coyotes shared a couple of hugs and pats on the helmet, then skated toward the tunnel leading to the locker room. As celebrations go, it wasn't much more emotion than they would have shown for any other game. That's because the division title isn't what they're...
