Stephen Kettner The Washington Capitals have struggled over the last week but that didn’t stop rookie defenseman Steve Oleksy from winning his first NHL fight. The Capitals were losing to the Carolina Hurricanes 3-0 with 14:29 left in the 3rd period when he and Drayson Bowman dropped the gloves.
The fight didn’t last nearly as long as it took to start, however the only punches landed were via Oleksy’s fists. It is rare to see NHL fights with such clean punches thrown, that’s what makes this fight exciting. It was quick, to the point and violent.

Guest Column: Alexander Semin thriving in new environment
It's not too often I have a guest writer on here, but ESPN TrueHoop writer Michael Pina showed me an article he wrote on Alexander Semin and I thought it was worth posting on here. Semin has quickly established himself as a fan-favorite among Caniacs and it's nice to see that his strong play has been catching the national eye this year, too.
Whenever a professional athlete...
Surging Hurricanes beat slumping Capitals
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Riley Nash scored twice, Joe Corvo put one in off the goaltender's mask, and Justin Peters got his second career shutout Tuesday night as the surging Carolina Hurricanes beat the slumping Washington Capitals 4-0, taking the first leg of a key home-and-home series between the Southeast Division rivals.
Patrick Dwyer added an empty-net goal, and Peters made...
Capitals-Hurricanes Preview
After dominating the slumping Washington Capitals in the opener of this home-and-home set, the Carolina Hurricanes have a chance to make another big statement Thursday night.
The first-place Hurricanes try to hand the visiting Capitals a season-worst fourth consecutive regulation loss as these Southeast Division rivals square off again.
Carolina (15-9-1) has outscored opponents...
Kirilenko and Ovechkin talking wedding plans
Tennis player Maria Kirilenko and hockey star Alex Ovechkin are talking wedding plans between their busy schedules, although the Russian couple hasn't set a date.
''Now it's a little bit difficult because I'm playing and Alex is playing,'' Kirilenko said Wednesday after winning her quarterfinal match at the BNP Paribas Open. ''We are just in the...
What's different about the Hurricanes penalty kill?
The Hurricanes penalty kill reached a new low on February 11, 2013 when the New York Islanders powerplay lit them up for four goals in a game but since then, things have been looking up. The Canes PK has allowed only six goals in the 14 games since then and have climbed their way out of the bottom-10 in the NHL. How effective they have been on the PK in the last 13 games has actually...
Good offense can be the best defense
I think most would agree that the Hurricanes have not been a great defensive team this year. They rank towards the bottom of the league in shots against, penalty killing and seem to get involved in run-and-gun style games almost every other night. This makes for some very exciting hockey but it can drive fans insane at times because blown coverages and defensive mistakes are going...
Game 25 Preview: Hurricanes at Capitals
Carolina Hurricanes at Washington Capitals
7 p.m., Verizon Center
TV: FS-Carolinas, CSN-Washington
Ask any Caorlina fan what the low point of the Hurricanes season was and they will likely point to their 3-0 loss to the Washington Captials two weeks ago. The Hurricanes roster experienced a barrage of injuries at the time and put together easily their worst performance of...
Matt Karash: Gm #25 @Was: Canes make it look routine against Caps
On paper, the Carolina Hurricanes were the better team heading into Tuesday's matchup. And the Washington Capitals are mired in struggles, self-doubt and whatever else could ail a hockey team. So on paper, you would expect the Canes to put forward a solid effort and handily dispose of a weaker opponent. But how many times does that actually work in the NHL? Well tonight it...

Hurricanes-Capitals Preview
While the Washington Capitals try to prevent any further regression, the Carolina Hurricanes hope to maintain the level of play that has them atop the Southeast Division.
The Capitals look to avoid a third straight defeat as they visit the Hurricanes in the opener of a home-and-home set Tuesday night.
Washington (10-13-1) had won eight of 11 before a lack of discipline led to back...
