Canada’s starting goalie at the Winter Olympics will be determined by a number of factors and given we still have three months to go before the momentous decision is reached it figures the number of hideous nightmarish goals scored on one of the candidates in head-to-head competition won’t move the needle one way or another. And that’s how it should be. By the time the goaltender is named for the Maple Leaf in Sochi Roberto Luongo’s bizarro pas-de-deux with Dan Hamhuis will be forgotten and the position will go to the best player. But if you’re already handicapping this race Saturday night’s game between Montreal and Vancouver offered up some compelling visuals; not the least of which was the 39 stops the Habs’ Carey Price made at one end and the freak show Roberto Luongo was involved with at the other. “He was unbelievable” Canucks captain Henrik Sedin said of Price’s performance in a 4-1 Canadiens’ win. “There were a lot of shots everyone thought were goals. We played good enough to win.” Instead they fell to 3-3 and now hit the road for seven games with a few issues left unsettled. As for the game-winning goal: “I didn’t see it” said Luongo. And in case you missed the point Luongo again answered: “I didn’t see it.” Then: “I didn’t see what happened. I have to watch it on video.” And he added this gem when asked if he’s ever given up a weirder goal: “I didn’t give that one up” he said. Which was a strange end to a strange night. First the more positive story. Price who’d been just so-so over the first three starts of his campaign turned in a clinic on Saturday night in front of family friends and a national TV audience. The kid from the north country stopped 39 of 40 shots including 30 of 31 over the first two periods when the Canucks owned the game.
