After suffering back-to-back losses — the first against the New York Islanders, the team with the worst record in the Eastern Conference, and the second an embarrassing effort against the Dallas Stars — it was time to see whether the Capitals could get back to playing the kind of hockey that it takes to remain at the top of their game.  Enter the New Jersey Devils, a team that was hanging around the bottom third of the conference, for a home-and-home series.  On Friday, Washington traveled to Prudential Center, the Devils’ home ice, to attempt to get back to their winning ways. The first period left many Caps fans with a sense of frustration.  Not only were the Capitals outskated; Alexander Semin once again took another cheap penalty midway through the first period and Washington’s defensive all-star, Mike Green, was back in the lineup for the first time in weeks — only to be injured and not return.  The Devils scored one at the 13:06 mark, but frankly the Caps wer...

Why Ovechkin Should Be Like Brett

Alexander Ovechkin is at a crossroads in his career. He is still the same happy-go-lucky Russian sniper who took the NHL by storm after the lockout, and therein lies the problem. When he was a 20-year old rookie, Ovie could fly down the left wing, turn a defenseman inside out, cut across the middle on his off-wing and bury a shot. Frankly, for his first couple of seasons, he...

It has been reported that Mike Green will not make this week’s upcoming road trip with the team after sustaining a lower-body injury according to Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau. Boudreau added that he hopes Green will be able to join the team possibly during the trip. Green has been listed as day-to-day again, just four days after playing in his first game in three weeks. He...

Capitals D Green ruled out again vs. Devils

Wideman's endurance put to test because of injuries to defensemen

Dennis Wideman joked recently that the right leg hematoma he suffered in March makes that leg "instantly older" - like 37-year-old Capitals teammate Roman Hamrlik. Injuries to Washington's defensemen over the weekend gave both of Wideman's legs quite a workout, as he played by far a game-high 33:52 Saturday and ...

Capitals Take 3 of 4 Points in Home-and-Home Series

The Washington Capitals took three out of a possible four points in their home-and-home series against the New Jersey Devils, Friday and Saturday nights. When the Devils jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead Saturday night, the Capitals responded quickly to tie it. It wasn’t until mid-way through the third when Jason Chimera grinded his way down the ice, shorthanded, to score what...

Capitals' Brooks Laich takes defensive assignment in stride against Devils

Brooks Laich likes to skate with Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Brett Clark in the summertime and learn the position --- just in case the Washington Capitals ever need him to slide back to the blue line. "I really try to work on that part of my game, just for situations ...

Devil May Care: Washinton Capitals 2, New Jersey Devils 3 (SO)

It has been an eventful week for the Washington Capitals.  A lackluster loss to Dallas on Tuesday, a bag skate on Wednesday, a come-from-behind 3-1 victory last night in Newark when the Caps got Mike Green back only to lost him again and where Bruce Boudreau benched Alex Semin and Cody Eakin.  Now tonight, the Caps looked to dance with the Devils in the pale moon light and sweep...

Devils take Washington in a shootout

This was another gut check for a New Jersey team that seemed to have a few of them already in its first 15 games. They responded again. This time, against one of the best teams in the league. Paying back the Washington Capitals for a come-from-ahead loss 24 hours earlier on home ice, the Devils battled back from a two-goal deficit for a 3-2 shootout victory at Verizon Center.
