700 Level:
I'm not quite sure what former Flyers goalie Martin Biron could have done to be banished to the Island, but it must have been more egregious than his performance as a Philadelphia Flyer. Marty was serviceable at worst, dominant when at his best, and always a great teammate and club representative.
Yet when the free agency period started, one of the best goalies available went unsigned during the frenzy, waiting and waiting for a deal until ultimately signing with the league's worst team—the New York Islanders—who just so happen to already have two starting-caliber backstops. Rather than the multiyear, multimillion dollar deal he was hoping for, he signed a Ray Emery-level $1.4 million, 1-year deal with the Isles, where, barring a trade or prolonged injury, he'll share time with Dwayne Roloson and Rick DiPietro. Rollo and Dip are both making considerably more than Biron will, so you figure out the pecking order. While many Flyers fans wanted Biron back over a riskier gamble on Emery, many of us weighed the options wondering whether Marty was a championship-caliber goalie, leaning toward "probably not." But a Cerberus situation on Long Island? We'd all hoped he'd find a better situation than that.Stretch relation: Ruben Amaro Jr's decision to let Pat Burrell wade into the uncertain waters of free agency ended similarly for the Bat and Biron—PtB's market value was far below his original asking price. Now if only Emery can turn out to be a Raul Ibanez type of impact player this year...
