I know this is a day or two old, but it deserves a mention, because it is that damn cool.  For the Winter Classic alumni game, Detroit has managed to convince 4 of the 5 members of the original (OG for the kids) Russian Five to play.    The Red Wings announced this afternoon that Sergei Fedorov, Slava Fetisov, Igor Larionov and Vladimir Konstantinov will take part in the festivities that will be part of the Red Wings alumni game against the Toronto Maple Leafs Dec. 31 at Comerica Park. That includes everyone other than Kozlov, who is undecided so far because he is still playing in the KHL.  I'm freaking ecstatic that they were able to pull this off.  After the falling out between the Wings brass and Fedorov, I'm impressed with both sides ability to put the past behind them and realize that they both meant something special to each other.  A few people are worried about boos.   Don't be.  I mean, the guy made this commerical while with Detroit.  [youtube]TdS1dbmiQFg[/yo...

Red Wings overnight report: there ain’t no easy way ‘home’ for Sergei Fedorov

I didn’t need Jeff Riger or any of you to remind Red Wings fans that Sergei Fedorov remains an incredibly controversial player. On my second-to-last night in Grand Marais, I mentioned his inclusion in the Winter Classic Alumni Showdown, and one uncle talked about Fedorov as instrumental to the three Cups that the Wings won with a player “who could dominate like Bobby Orr,”...

Red Wings overnight report: Danny Cleary and Jan Mursak, reclamation projects

Between this Saturday’s charity baseball game held by Red Wings Alumni Association president Joey Kocur, the Plymouth Whalers’ alumni game that’s also benefiting Gleaners on Saturday, a trio of Swedish charity hockey games first involving Niklas Kronwall Jonathan Ericsson and Gustav Nyquist, and then Henrik Zetterberg and a smorgasbord of NHL stars, and the simple fact that...

Red Wings overnight report: defensemen, Doan, CBA fun, prospect tournament talk and ‘lady Wings?’

The Red Wings have at least three personnel moves to take care of before the team reassembles for training camp and the exhibition season (whenever that may be): the team needs to address Tomas Holmstrom’s future, the Wings need to re-sign Justin Abdelkader, and the Wings’ front office needs to decide whether it will attempt to make a trade for a top-pair defenseman prior to...

Sergei deserves warm welcome home

Sergei Fedorov is one of the greatest Red Wings in the history of the franchise. Nobody can deny that. Fedorovs three Stanley Cups, Hart Trophy, Lester B. Pearson Award, two Selke trophies and numerous All-Star teams accomplished in a Detroit uniform have earned him Red Wings immortality. Once you toss in Sergeis 954 points in 908 games and his 163 points in 162 playoff games...

A Trade Proposal For You

Once again it’s Paul and this time I have a question for you. A Detroit fan at HFBoards proposed the following trade: Valtteri Filppula, Gustav Nyquist, Jakub Kindl and a 2nd round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft for Ryan Kesler. Both Kindl ($833K) and Nyquist ($875K) will be RFAs after this season and Filppula ($3M) will have UFA status on July 1st, 2013.  Kesler ($5M) is signed...

Please Don’t Boo Fedorov

Paul here for George who should start his regular blogging routine the early part of next week… from Jeff Riger of CBS Detroit, I’m not one to tell fans what to do when they attend games. If they want to boo they should boo, if they want to heckle, they should heckle, if they want to do the wave, well I think you know where I’m going here. However when I heard the news that...

Which Teams Could Provide Detroit Red Wings’ Trade Options on Defense?

Here’s what a shirt sees after being shot out of a t-shirt cannon (video)

Oh, so that’s what it looks like. Then my dreams were accurate. According to the YouTube description from the Grand Rapids Griffins, the AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, the mad scientists behind this experiment “wrapped a GoPro camera in a t-shirt and sent it flying out of the world famous Griff Gatling Gun.” [...]

Red Wings afternoon news: on the Russian Winter Classic 5, hypotehtical gabba and charitable news

Upper Michigan weather—it’s about 65 degrees here and we’ve got a chilly wind blowing in off Lake Superior at a good 20 miles an hour—has me wearing jeans and a flannel shirt a couple hundred miles north of a Metro Detroit area pushing 100 degrees, so I thought I’d wander into internet range and deliver you this Tweet from RedWingsFeed and then toss off some charity hockey...
