Clinging to the No. 8 spot in the Western Conference playoff picture and a 21-year playoff streak, the Red Wings could've used a win against the not-very-good Calgary Flames on the road. Instead, they gave away two brutal goals and lost 3-2.  At 47 points, the Wings are still holding on to the No. 8 spot due to having the tie breaker over the Columbus Blue Jackets, also at 47 points. However, the Blue Jackets are playing right now and are tied 2-2 in the third period.  GIFs, if you couldn't tell, are via SB Nation

Khan: Red Wings have touched base with Datsyuk’s agent, but no other contracts are on front-burner

We'd heard this from the CBC's Elliotte Friedman, but it's great to have a Wings beat writer confirm it: According to MLive's Ansar Khan, Red Wings GM Ken Holland has indeed "touched base" with Pavel Datsyuk's agent, Gary Greenstin, and while the Wings can't formally re-sign Datsyuk (whose situation is "complicated" given that, after the...

Flames 3, Red Wings 2

Steve Begin couldn't recall scoring a strangers pair of goals. Begin scored two goals in the third period, and the Calgary Flames held on to hand the playoff-hopeful Detroit Red Wings a 3-2 loss on Wednesday night. ''We always say when you work hard, things somehow (are) going to turn for you,'' Begin said. ''I guess it happened tonight not once, but...

Badgers captain Ramage signs deal with Flames

John Ramage, the two year captain of the Wisconsin Badgers hockey program was a draft pick of the Calgary Flames back in 2010 (4th round, 103rd overall) but, instead of leaving then or a year early he stayed and finished his eligibility as a Badger. Calgary Flames Sign Reto Berra by   Steven Ellis

The Calgary Flames have signed Reto Berra to a one year entry-level contract worth $625,000. Berra, 26, was the Blues’ fourth-round pick (No. 106) at the 2006 NHL Draft. He has spent his entire professional career in Switzerland, making his debut in the National League B for the GCK Lions in 2003-2004. During the 2005/06 season he was the back-up to Ari [...]

Why extending the contract of Jimmy Howard was without a doubt the right move for the Wings

Monday the Red Wings made it official by announcing that they extending the contract of starting goaltender Jimmy Howard. The financials for the contract was what was speculated on a few weeks back which was a 6-year deal for $31.8 million dollars and an annual cap hit of $5.3 million dollars going forward. Now of course like in just about any contract situation with a player (especially...

Metro Detroit’s best-kept hockey secret, the Plymouth Whalers, battle the ‘Yankees of Junior Hockey’

Yahoo Sports' Neate Sager reports that Plymouth Whalers coach Mike Velucci played the underdog card in a big way ahead of Plymouth's OHL Western Conference Final match-up against the London Knights, but in doing so, Velucci did speak the truth regarding the fact that the Whalers are the best Detroit-area hockey team that you've probably rarely heard of: "It...

Red Wings-Flames wrap-up and overnight report: desperate times

The Detroit Red Wings are in trouble, and the only people that can help the Wings are the players who don red and white jerseys every night. After dropping a 3-2 decision to the Calgary Flames--the Wings' third straight loss against Calgary--the 20-16-and-7 Wings (having played 43 games and possessing 18 Regulation-or-OT Wins) have 47 points and sit in 9th place in the Western...

Red Wings afternoon news: to make the playoffs, the Wings must win at least 3 of 5 remaining games

I haven't slept since a pre-game nap prior to the Red Wings' rather wretched 3-2 loss to the Calgary Flames last night for reasons mostly not involving the game, but given that I came home from a 100-mile round trip of ferrying the mom to an appointment with 60+ "You've Received a Comment" notifications, I'm just going to guess that more than a few of you...

Red Wings-Flames wrap-up: self-inflicted wounds decimate Wings

The Detroit Red Wings packed their equipment bags and headed for an off-day in Vancouver after dropping an 3-1 decision against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night, and their loss, combined with Columbus still playing (and are tied 2-2 as I write this) leaves the Wings in a particularly difficult position in the Western Conference standings, especially with Dallas (2 points behind...
