Despite losing to Boston 3-2 in a shoot out earlier this week, Toronto Maple Leaf’s head coach, Randy Carlyle was quite pleased with his team’s effort.  ”I thought we competed in the game,” he said in the post game press conference. From what I saw in the game, I quite agree, despite the fact the Toronto Maple Leafs gave up a 2-0 lead.  After all, they pushed shoot out to six rounds. Ironically, Carlyle was not too happy with his team’s performance the very next night against the Florida Panthers, in which the Leafs won 3-2. Joffrey Lupul Joffrey Lupul scored two goals in the Florida game.  Backup goalie, Ben Scrivens apparently was quite busy in net, making 40 saves. The Leafs next opponent would be the Carolina Hurricanes.  A team in which they are 0-2 this season. Toronto opened the scoring in the first period.  They jumped out to a 2-0 mid-way through the second (period). Minutes later, the Leafs made, what could of been a costly mistake. While short-handed, Carolina’s Eric Staal retrieved a blocked shot and scored on the break away to make it 2-1. Tied 2-2,  Staal scored again to give the Hurricanes a 3-2 lead.  It looked as if the Hurricanes were about to get a perfect 3-0 record against the Leafs this season. Mid-way through the period, though, Leaf`s captain, Dion Phaneuf scored the tying goal on the power play.  Just mere seconds later, Lupul scored a highlight reel goal to put the Leafs ahead once again. The Leafs put the game on ice by scoring two empty netters.  The Leafs finally got their first victory against Carolina this season, winning 6-3. Both Tyler Bozak and Phaneuf racked up three points (one goal, two assists) during the game. Lupul seems to be back in good form since getting off the Injured Reserve, racking up at least nine points, including four in two games. The Leafs face Ottawa tomorrow night.
