If all goes according to plan for Tim Thomas, the former Bruins goalie will be suiting up between the pipes for the Panthers when the puck drops in the regular-season opener. The 39-year-old netminder was signed to a professional tryout agreement on Monday after taking a year-long sabbatical from the game, but at least a couple of his former teammates don’t believe the time away from the NHL is going to slow him down. “If he wants to be good, he will be good, there’s no doubt about that,” Tuuka Rask told ESPNBoston.com. “I don’t think it’s too big of an issue to take a year off and come back. I’m sure he kept himself sharp, saw some pucks and it won’t be that big of a deal to come back. He’s definitely the guy to make it happen.” After three full seasons of playing together, Rask inherited the No. 1 starting job from Thomas once his rights were traded to the Islanders in 2010. Rask has fulfilled expectations for the B’s — and then some — cementing his role as the goaltender of the

Tim Thomas Suits Up After Year Off, Hits the Ice in Panthers Gear (Photos)

Tim Thomas, who wore the Black and Gold of the Boston Bruins for the majority of 2002-2012, made his first appearance back on the ice since taking a year off last season. The former B’s (and Islanders) goalie suited up for Florida on Tuesday after the longtime B’s backstop agreed to tryout for the Panthers this preseason. Reports indicate that he may even see live action against...

Tim Thomas Has No Regrets, But Says It Was Hard to Leave Bruins After They ‘Accepted Me as Part of the Family’

Tim Thomas‘ hockey hiatus came to an official close when he took the ice on Tuesday for training camp with the Florida Panthers. For the first time in his NHL career, Thomas will be suiting up in a sweater that does not have a spoked-B on the chest. While the two-time Vezina Trophy winner’s time in Boston ended in 2012 when his rights were traded to the Islanders, Boston unknowingly...

Chad Johnson, Niklas Svedberg Battling for Backup Spot Behind Tuukka Rask (Video)

Goaltender Anton Khudobin proved to be more than competent as the Bruins’ No. 2 last season, going 9-4-1 with a 2.32 goals against average in 14 starts. But now, with Khudobin moving on to back up Cam Ward in Carolina, the Bruins are tasked with finding a new understudy to Tuukka Rask. Rookie Malcolm Subban is a virtual lock to begin the season in Providence, leaving journeyman...

Tim Thomas Says 2013 Playoffs Got ‘Competitive Juices Flowing,’ That He ‘Was So Proud of’ Bruins

Tim Thomas is pushing 40, which is pretty old for just about any human, let alone a professional athlete. However, just like about everything else that tried to get in his way over the years, age isn’t stopping him from getting back between the pipes. Thomas joined the Panthers on Tuesday for a tryout and could be the starting goalie on Saturday when the team takes on Tampa Bay...

Watch: Iginla Scores Twice, Tim Thomas Watch

Ahhh, doesn't it feel great to know that the Bruins beat the Habs last night. Sure, it was preseason, and sure, it didn't really mean much at all, but come on, it's always nice to smoke the Canadiens. Anyway, all premature trash-talking aside (although feel free to chirp any Montreal fans), we did see a couple promising hints during last night's game, including...

Report- A New Owner For The Florida Panthers In The Next Few Weeks

from Josh Kosman of the New York Post, National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman is about to put out another fire, the Post has learned. A buyer for the money-losing Florida Panthers has been found and a deal should be announced within the next few weeks, two sources close to the situation said. “It’s imminent,” one of the sources said. The buyers are...

The Latest On The Sale Of The Florida Panthers

from George Richards of On Frozen Pond, Vincent “Vinnie” Viola, a prominent New York businessman and former minority owner of the NBA’s Nets, is leading a group in finalizing a deal to purchase the Florida Panthers from Palm Beach businessman Cliff Viner, an industry source said Wednesday. Letters of intent have been executed, but the transaction still needs to be...

Gregory Campbell ‘Very Grateful’ to Return, But Ready to Move On and Focus On Season

BOSTON — The last time Gregory Campbell was seen on TD Garden ice, he was hobbling off the ice, barely making it to the bench. He had broken his leg, of course, after blocking a shot in the Eastern Conference finals, ending his season. On Thursday night, Campbell was back on the Garden ice quite literally taking the next step in his recovery from that broken leg he suffered blocking...

Niklas Svedberg Impresses, Carter Camper Nets Winner in Bruins’ Shootout Win Over Capitals (Video)

The battle for Bruins backup goalie is one of the few real positional battles going on in B’s camp, and Niklas Svedberg did his best to make his case Tuesday night in Baltimore. The Bruins were in Maryland on Tuesday night to take on the Washington Capitals in preseason action, and the young netminder looked pretty good against the Caps. The 24-year-old made 12 saves on 13 shots...

Providence Pushes Boston Past Capitals

Super short recap today 'cause the game wasn't televised in Boston and the online feed we were using didn't start until the second period. From what we saw it was pretty much a snoozefest. But it was Providence Bruins members that pushed Boston to victory. THE GOOD Justin Florek scored Boston's first goal and then Chris Kelly scored so you know it was a meaningless...

Signs point to Bruins' Gregory Campbell’s return tonight vs. Red Wings

Gregory Campbell could make his return to game action as soon as tonight when the Bruins host the Detroit Red Wings at the Garden. And it will be tonight if Campbell has his druthers. “I think (tonight) is a realistic possibility” Campbell said after yesterday’s morning session at the Garden. “Talking to the surgeon the other day things look good. It’s just a matter of...

Tim Thomas Returns to Hockey, Derrick Rose to Return From ACL Tear Among Year’s Best Comebacks (Photos)

Bruins fans are all too familiar with the Tim Thomas saga, his political comments, and the way he left the team with a year remaining on his contract. Time has passed, however, and the Bruins proved that they’re a capable — if not improved team — behind Tuukka Rask. For the Boston Bruins, the Tim Thomas era is firmly over. It’s a different story for Thomas himself. The...

Eight Past Luon...Wait, What? BRUINS LOSE.

Patrice Purrgeron reporting for duty. Jon was supposed to do the recap, but he made too many Savard jokes at the game so he's in time out. He's bad. Very bad. I hope someone puts cat poop in his favorite shoes. About 10 minutes ago. That'd be hilarious. So the Bruins got crushed. CRUSHED. Detroit beat them like the red headed step child of a rented...

Preseason Game #3: Detroit Red Wings at Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins open up their first home preseason tonight against the Detroit Red Walkers Wings.  As we talked about on #DOYLive last night, the NHL has had a bunch of ridiculous rule changes including:  A penalty when a fighter removes his helmet before the fight Hybrid icing Jersey tuck penalty.  Yeah, the NHL has a rule against having a...
