With a trip to the National Championship game on the line, Union’s heart, tenacity, and skill prevailed over the finesse and star power of Boston College as the Dutchmen defeated the Eagles 5-4 Thursday evening at the Wells Fargo Center.The Eagles would open the scoring just 2:08 into the game and it was the terrific trio of Johnny Gaudreau, Bill Arnold, and Kevin Hayes that struck. After Hayes’ (CHI) initial shot was stopped by Union goalie Colin Stevens, Gaudreau (CGY) found a loose rebound and netted his 36th marker of the year. For Hayes, it was his 37th assist on the year. Arnold (CGY) also collected an assist on the goal.
The trio of Gaudreau, Hayes, and Arnold is arguably the best trio in college hockey. They were established together earlier this season and have combined for a whopping 54 goals, 75 assists, and 129 points in 26 games.
