Just last week NHL fans around the world had hope, Gary Bettman, Commissioner of the NHL, and the NHL owner’s had presented a new deal which would allow for the NHL to have an 82 game season, starting on November 1. The proposal asked that the players and owners spilt the hockey related revenue 50/50, which has undoubtly been the largest point of contention this lockout. Fans were thrilled, happiness exploded on twitter, but within 24 hours, Donald Fehr, leader of the NHLPA, and the players had written the new deal off. They agreed it was progress, but not right for them.
This offer was withdrawn yesterday, and it is looking like the NHL is cancelling all games through November 30 today. This is a large chunk of games and will cancel two of the biggest games this season, the Hall of Fame Game to celebrate Mats Sundin, Pavel Bure, Adam Oates and Joe Sakic being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, as well as the NHL Thanksgiving Day Showdown between the Boston Bruins and the New York Rangers.
Bill Daly announced yesterday however that there was no intension to cancel the NHL All Star scheduled for late January at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, OH, but one has to assume that the “All Star Game” would not be a priority especially if they are attempting to have even a half season. The biggest thing that could go however is the New Year’s Day Winter Classic, arguably the best thing Bettman had brought to hockey. The Winter Classic is scheduled to be held at the Big House in Ann Arbor, Michigan and its cancellation would most likely mean the death of the season.
There is nothing fans can do, but wait for a resolution. However if its any consolation, President Barak Obama in on our side, stating in an interview on the Tonight show, “Every time these things happen I just want to remind the owners and players: You guys make money because you’ve got a whole bunch of fans out there who are working really hard — they buy tickets, they’re watching on TV.” He went on to say “Y’all should be able to figure this out. Get this done.” So come on NHL/NHLPA, Mr. President wants his hockey back too!

Vote: When Do You Believe the 2012-13 NHL Season Will Start?
