Greetings from the Pepsi Center, where the Avalanche is hosting the Vancouver Canucks. Defenseman Tyson Barrie, who was recalled from the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League, will not make his NHL debut today. I’m told he recently boarded a flight in Cleveland. He will probably play Tuesday against the Chicago Blackhawks, given that he’s not being called up to watch. Barrie leads Lake Erie in scoring with 29 points (five goals) in 46 games. He is minus-1 with 91 shots and two power-play goals. He replaces fellow rookie Stefan Elliott, who tailed off after a slick start to his NHL career in November. Elliott has 11 points (four goals) in 30 games with the Avs. Colorado will continue carrying eight defensemen, but that might change with the pending return of center Matt Duchene. Barrie might just get a “cup of coffee” with the Avs, an award for having a good run with the LEM. But if he immediately chips in offensively and isn’t a defensive liability, he could of course stick.
