Did Kari Lehtonen just make the save of the 2013 season? We'll see, but he certainly made one that got the hockey world buzzing. After a Jack Johnson shot hit Lehtonen in the arm/shoulder, the puck was on a one-way course to the back of the net.
Not so fast, said Lehtonen, as he spun and backhanded the puck out of the net with his glove. Lehtonen's awareness and reflexes are remarkable here, especially when you consider his margin for error was almost zero. Had he swiped his glove a bit differently, he actually would have assisted the puck in finding the back of the net.
Lehtonen is on a bit of a roll of late. Prior to making this incredible save, he had a bit of fun at Detroit's expense. Upon allowing a goal late in the third against the Red Wings, Lehtonen was quick to remind fans to look at the scoreboard, where Dallas still led 2-1. Classic.

The shortened NHL season is only in it's early stages, and the Dallas Stars goalie already has a top candidate for save of the year. Kari Lehtonen made a save that not only shocked me when I watched it, it faked out the announcers too. The puck seemed to ricochet off his shoulder and hang in the air for a couple seconds. Lehtonen didn't give up on it and decided to...
The Dallas Stars were in Ohio on Monday night to take on the Columbus Blue Jackets. While the game was light on offense and the Stars came up short on the road, losing to the hometown squad by a score of 2-1, little blame can be laid at the feet of Stars netminder Kari Lehtonen. Among his 25 saves on the night was this stupendous display of goaltending, in which he miraculously makes...

Blue Jackets defenseman Jack Johnson had Stars goalie Keri Lehtonen beaten for a split second. Johnson’s wrister hit Lehtonen in the trapper, tipped up over the goalie’s shoulder was headed for the net when Lehtonen used his go-go gadget reflexes to reach behind himself for a backhanded snatch. It was part pitcher-fielding-a-comebacker part magician, but it’s definitely the...
Check out this incredible save from last night’s game between the Dallas Stars and the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Jackets are inches away from scoring the game’s opening goal, but Stars netminder Kari Lehtonen reaches behind his back to rob Columbus defenseman Jack Johnson of a sure tally. FRISCO, Texas (AP) -- The Dallas Stars have recalled defenseman Jamie Oleksiak and forward Antoine Roussel from the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League.
Dallas also Wednesday assigned Reilly Smith to Texas.
The 6-foot-7 Oleksiak, a first-round pick in 2011, has 23 points (three goals, 20 assists) in 43 games for the Texas Stars and was an AHL All-Star this season. Roussel...
A reach behind, mid-air grab.
The Dallas Stars have placed forward Derek Roy on injured reserve with a groin injury, clearing a roster spot for the expected debut of Jamie Benn on Monday night at Columbus.
Roy, who was acquired from Buffalo in a trade that sent Steve Ott to the Sabres, was hurt Thursday against Chicago. He has two assists in four games.
Benn and the Stars agreed on a five-year, $26.25 million...
A lack of opportunist offense and untimely defensive breakdowns have been an often fatal combination for the 2-4-1 Dallas Stars in the early going of the 2013 season. The work ethic is still there, but Kari Lehtonen has been keeping the team in games that really haven't been all that close in terms of quality scoring chances.
Last night, the Stars played a reasonably solid...
Eight Bruins have won the NHL’s Calder Memorial Trophy — which is given to the rookie of the year — but winning it doesn’t always necessarily mean you’re on the path to stardom.
While Bobby Orr and Ray Bourque won the award and now have their numbers retired at the TD Garden, some players — including the person who is Tuesday’s answer to The Four’s Trivia Question...
from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,
Morrow is playing on the fourth line and has logged less than 10 minutes a game in each of the last two outings. He hasn’t seen that kind of role since he wore No. 45 while breaking in as a rookie back in 1999-2000. It’s not an easy decision for the Stars to make, and it’s not an easy reality for Morrow, who has played 812 games...
The Dallas Stars haven't been able to close out their last two opponents, but having Jamie Benn back could help if they're in that position again Monday night at Columbus.
So could first-liners Jaromir Jagr and Derek Roy.
Benn could make his season debut and Jagr and Roy might return from one-game injury absences as the Stars face a Blue Jackets team that's winless since...
When Ken Holland signed Jordin Tootoo this offseason, he had one role in mind for him – nastiness. Tuesday night, in front of a packed Joe Louis Arena, Tootoo tangoed with two Dallas Stars.
The first was right off the opening face-off with Eric Nystrom. It was obviously pre-arranged, possibly with a “save the date” card.
And his second fight, with Brenden Dillion, was...

The Red Wings
Like Dallas, the Wings have been off to a shaky start. They’ve alternated between wins and losses so far this season (on track for a win tonight if the trend continues) though their play has looked better the past few games.
The Wings lost...
PREVIEW 7:45 AM CST
Goals have been hard to come by for the Dallas Stars (2-3-1) in the team's last few games. The team has been in position to win each of the last three games, but has been unable to protect one-goal leads and unable to scratch out equalizing goals once they do fall behind. Glen Gulutzan's team will try again tonight when they head to Motown to take...
Let's put all of the serious talk about the Manti Te'o girlfriend hoax aside for a few minutes and enjoy some humor.
Even the Dallas Stars got in on the fun by welcoming Te'o's girlfriend to their home opener.
