Over the last week, it has become quite clear that John Tavares is going to be a superstar in the league. The former first-overall pick scored five goals in three games and added two assists. He had a hat-trick against the Devils, which was certainly his most impressive game of the season. Factor in five power play points from three goals and two assists, and Tavares had a monster week.
2. Pekka Rinne (Nashville Predators)

Pekka is making a case for himself as an early Vezina trophy favorite in 2013. Last week alone Rinne had two shutouts against the Sharks and the Coyotes, two playoff teams from a season ago. Pekka gave up two goals in three games, both to the Ducks, and boasts a GAA of 0.64 from last week. If he can keep this level of play up, there is no reason that the Predators shouldn’t be a cup favorite heading into the middle of...

AROUND THE WEB
I’ve written eight straight pieces about the NBA. Clearly, I need to switch things up a bit.
So let’s talk about the NHL. The Devils are not quite New York but as New Jersey’s lone professional team, they are playing some of the best hockey in the entire league and find themselves second in the Eastern Conference.
Many think the time is now for the Rangers who started off...
During Monday's Flyers-Islanders game at Nassau Coliseum, MSG announcer Howie Rose called the Phillie Phanatic a "washed-up, overrated hack" as the camera showed Mr. Met hugging a fan during the first intermission. Rose also mentioned that Mr. Met was "America's favorite mascot according to a national poll", leading to his slander of the Phanatic.
Portland Memorial Coliseum
The Calendar said it was President's Day in the USA and Family Day in many parts of Canada but for several New York Ranger and New York Islander prospects it might as well be "Kicked Butt day" or "Got My Butt Kicked" Day.
That view was from my seat in the press box at the Portland Memorial Coliseum as I was there to see how Brenden...
from Elliotte Friedman of CBC,
- New York Islanders GM Garth Snow said he wants to keep netminder Evgeni Nabokov and defencemen Mark Streit and Lubomir Visnovsky (Newsday's Arthur Staple reported that preliminary talks are underway with Streit). That's consistent with what the Islanders are telling other teams, at least until we see if they have staying power into April...
We’re not sure if the ice in Uniondale is made with holy water but John Tavares and Matt Moulson each had four-point nights in a 5-1 exorcism by the Islanders over the Devils.
Tavares scored two goals in 1:23 at the tail end of the second period to get Islanders up 2-0 before Moulson struck on the power play at 19:04 for a 3-0 lead. Tavares finished off his hat trick on the power...
NEW YORK (February 18, 2013) -- New York Islanders center John Tavares, Anaheim Ducks goaltender Viktor Fasth and Carolina Hurricanes center Jiri Tlusty have been named the NHL's 'Three Stars' for the period ending Feb. 17. Continue reading "Stars Of The Week"
Are the Philadelphia Flyers back in form to make a run at the playoffs? Not yet. Sorry Flyers fans one offensive explosion is not going to convince anyone that the Broad Street Bullies are back in playoff form. What they did against the Islanders, Monday afternoon, was spectacular. Sean Couturier  limited the  Islanders best player and goal scorer, John Tavares, to two shots...
The New Jersey Devils traveled to Long Island Saturday and started Johan Hedberg in hopes of picking up wins on consecutive nights over divisional opponents. Their hope didn't come to fruition, though, as the New York Islanders, lead by John Tavares and Matt Moulson, defended home ice and picked up a decisive 5-1 win over the Devils.
- Though Hedberg allowed...
