By Ryan Kiray (@RyanK_THG) The Canucks’ firing of Mike Gillis on Tuesday was not entirely unpredictable. Slightly more perplexing is the notion that the Canucks somehow did what they did because of backlash from their fans; Gillis was certainly not the league’s most incompetent front office czar, but his termination was less about fan relations than the fact that Gillis lost two star goaltenders and was on the cusp of losing a former 40-goal scorer during a series of questionable decision-making that has now seen the Canucks officially eliminated from playoff contention. In some sense, perhaps, the expectations of Vancouver fans may have lead Canucks ownership to oust Gillis, but only insofar as the fans expect the team to be a Cup contender and Gillis’ blunders eliminated the possibility of that happening. Regardless, the proverbial horse that was Gillis’ tenure in Vancouver is dead; there is no need to beat it any further. What is more interesting is where the Canucks go from here...
