ST. PAUL, Minn. The Minnesota Wild called up some defensive reinforcement for the opening of the playoffs in Chicago, adding defenseman Marco Scandella from the Houston Aeros of the American Hockey League. Minnesota, the eighth seed in the Western Conference, is in the playoffs for the first time in five years and face the top-seeded Blackhawks on Tuesday. Scandella, 23, played in six games for the Wild earlier this season with a goal and four penalty minutes. He was sent down to Houston in early February and had two goals and 15 assists in 45 games for the Aeros. Scandella added one goal in two Calder Cup playoff games for Houston. Minnesota reassigned forward Stephane Veilleux to the Aeros in a corresponding move.Scandella played 63 games for the Wild last season, with three goals and nine assists. He was second among all NHL rookies last year in blocked shots (106) and average time on ice (21 minutes, 46 seconds). The 6-foot-3, 210-pound native of Montreal, Quebec, skated in 63 contests with Minnesota in 2011-12 and collected 12 points (3-9=12) and 19 PIM. He ranked second among NHL rookies in TOIgame (21:46) and logged a franchise-record 35:32 in ice time vs. Chicago on April 5, 2012. He notched two assists in 20 games with Minnesota and added 19 points (3-16=19) in 33 games with Houston during the 2010-11 campaign. Follow Brian Hall on Twitter.
